From a practical guide to decoration, published in 1973 by Reader's Digest, we find this vintage home shot via Flickr. We're for more of a timeless style, and this photo screams of a particular time. Nonetheless, we were able to list some lessons learned from this vintage practical guide:
- Open shelving as spatial dividers: lets light through while storing and displaying objects.
- Varied pads of light create "rooms" within a room.
- We'll always like a white palette with bursts of color, no matter what the period.
- That built-in seating looks like it could double for guest sleeping.
What do you think - what practical lessons are to be learned from this 1970's guide? We'd love to Flickr Find your present-day Montreal homes - please just label your Flickr photos with "apartmenttherapymontreal".

apartmenttherapymontreal? Is there something we should know? :)
On topic: I have that big, orange RD book and it's a classic!

Since it is in the background it is difficult to tell but the built-in seating looks like two twin-sized mattresses and boxsprings covered in fitted sheets. Which is a great idea if your children have recently moved out of the house!

If those are twin mattresses - brilliant! I may incorporate that into a playroom someday.

"We're for more of a timeless style. . ." Although we may not recognized it now, all styles have a 'time' and in 20 years we will think what we did now to our houses today was hideous. In 30 years, fun but kitschy; and in 50 years absolutely tasteful.

Trust me, a lot of what we're doing today will NEVER be considered tasteful again. EVER.
That little room up above is a mixed bag. With all of those items exposed it's more than a little cluttered. The layout of the furniture is all wrong, too. The left side of the room looks great, with that wonderful inexpensive seating area (I agree - twin mattresses), but the right hand side of the room is a mess.

That avocado green and burnt orange should never ever have been brought back and even it looks state the art now, your concept design will look date in 10 years.
timeless style? then why is every post either about MCM or about European modern design? Please the tiffany blue rooms, chocolate shades, low furniture and keep calm and carry on have already expires as even unique let alone timeless style.

i think it's adorable. with wood flooring and some shag rugs, i'd take this little apartment in a heartbeat. it looks like the matching chairs on the left and the right sides of the photo have storage space under the seat.
