apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Outside: David and James' Modern Courtyard Garden

Name: David and James
Location: Minneapolis, MN

David and James sent us in photos of their gorgeous modern garden. They say that the style statement is "Walker Art Center sculpture garden meets Fire Island"....

David and James had this to say about the project for the 12x16 outside space of their townhome: The garden design team of Rosenlof-Lucas transformed a poorly designed, ho-hum enclosed courtyard into a remarkable outdoor room. Sensitive materials prevail, such as Cor-Teen steel (planters and trim) gray pebble stone, and Mexican blue stone. It's separated into two zones: one for eating, the other for meditation and relaxation.

Thanks, David and James!

This is just the kind of outdoor space I would love to have, plants but no grass to cut and a space for my kitties to safely enjoy the outside. It's beautiful.

How nice to come home at the end of the day to sit outside in a lovely area! A glass of wine comes to mind...

Can you please tell me where I can order those large grey pebbles?

This looks really nice...I can't wait till we have a house and can do something similar.

I'd love to see more outdoor spaces on AT, but I realize that most of us don't have outdoor spaces to do things with. Ho hum.

Hey, Guys -- love your very zen, very low maintenance garden. I live in the same zone as you (though across the border), so some sort of rendition of this would be wonderful.

Could you provide a source for the large grey stones and the terracotta bird in what looks to be an awesome pebble splasher? Thanks in advance.

Kitty looks very happy and healthy!

Stunning. Creative, balanced, harmonious, and it looks like you didn't spend a ton of money.

A job well done!

Beautiful -- I'd like to know the paint color too!

And starckmad, that kitty isn't tubby, it's a Maine Coon! They're naturally big and have lots of fur :) (I would know, I have one of my own... he's only 9 months old and is already bigger than the previous, "regular" male cat I had!)

Hate the chairs. Seems claustrophobic. Nothing at all is unexpected, except for the chicken thing, which is just about the only thing I find inspired about this.

Lovely space. I would be in my pj's, sipping wine and just enjoying the beauty. BTW, your cat is fabulous, almost like a wooly mammoth kitten!

First my next door neighbor was working like crazy on his yard this weekend. And now I have to look at THIS!

I love it! It's similar to the look I want in my own small backyard.

If I could just get motivated . . . . (I've built an 8 by 12 feet slate patio on dust on my own - it's so physically demanding.)

In regards to the negative comments by thebradseed - the chairs are vintage Italian emu chairs. Having spent some time in the garden on summer evenings is not claustrophobic at all and what is expected about outdoor candle sconces and vera place mats. It's a charming space that frankly I have traveled all over the world and haven't seen before. Cudos to David and James!

Jessi,

You're biased, and it's "kudos."

It's dull.

Thebradseed,

You seem like a very unhappy camper. Jessi is entitled to her opinion, like you.

This makes me sad about my empty patio/balcony. Anyone have any tips on where to find stylish patio furniture? Anything I have come across is dreadfully traditional. If I see one more wrought iron park bench .... urgh
