apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Roof Garden by mabarchitects

If we lived in this building, we could escape every night to our rooftop paradise overlooking the streets of Athens. Like many major cities, Athens suffers from a shortage of public parks and yards. Most Athenian buildings, however, offer lots of opportunity for green space since they're built with flat roofs that can easily be converted into decks and gardens. Click below to see how Greek firm mabarchitects created this rooftop deck on a budget...

The young couple that owned the building's top-floor apartment wanted "a place where they [could] hang out with their friends, organize parties etc. All of this had to be achieved on a tight budget." To save money, the architects used Iroko hardwood planks for all the furniture and surface coverings.

As the architects explain, "[the] surface of the floor folds and wraps the wall, the wall becomes a table or a bench, a bench becomes a bed or a planter etc."

The two freestanding benches/planters were fitted with casters so they could easily be moved across the deck. The edges of the roof deck are planted with trees.

Really wonderful looking!
Must of cost a huge amount of money---my little deck cost way to much.

Any referrals to build a roofdeck in Chicago? Mine won't be built to code (requiring both an in/egress point), and I haven't found many resources for DIY without an architect/engineer's involvement.
