From K's Original Comment/Entry:

"Our apartment is the top floor of an 1890's house; previous tenants used some wretched paint (still visible from certain angles) and our landlord has outlawed our *totally reasonable* color choices to ban painting altogether. Our walls are made of some spongy material that either loosely holds nails or rejects them altogether. As a result, our apartment walls are mostly bare and/or full of attempted holes. We just renewed our lease for another year and we'd love to update our place with something that won't get us kicked out or require spackle."

The photos of the hallway look fantastic. Thanks to K for entering and sharing her makeover!

We're posting all three AT:Chicago finalists this week. Be sure to look for the finalists in LA, NY and SF, too.

Yeah, does anyone know what that 'spongy material' is, exactly? Nails go in, but they wiggle right out, and screws don't screw in because the material isn't sturdy enough to hold the spiral shape. ANy thoughts on this? I can't really hang shelves or even towel hooks because of this problem.

that "spongy material" is called plaster. it's super hard but crumbles easily. if you want to hang something with any weight, you need a special drill bit for ceramic, and toggle bolts made for plaster walls. if you talk to an experienced person at your hardware store, they probably have many solutions for plaster walls. even search the AT site, there are bound to be more suggestions.
