Look! Small Space Party Glasses

4-17-08wine1.jpg

Earlier this week, we rounded up a few small space wine racks. Today, we're sharing one of our own solutions to the space dilemma. We like using small patterned glasses to serve wine and cocktails. Stemware can take up a lot of room in kitchen cabinets, and these little guys are much better space savers...

They don't decant or keep temperature as well as a traditional wine glass, but to be honest we're not connoisseurs and we'd rather keep a set of small glasses on hand for a party than a dozen wine glasses.

We've used stemware in the past, and we still have a few wine glasses, but we're enjoying the small party glasses so much that we think we'll stick with them. These were given to us as a gift a couple of years ago, so we don't have the source, although we think they were purchased at Fly Bird in Oak Park.

Super cute! They don't have a brand name on them? Lots of glasses like these turn up if you google "Moroccan tea glass", but none I like as much as these.

Caitlin, I looked for a brand name and couldn't find one. Sorry! Thanks for the compliment!

Cute glasses Sarah!!!

I have both stemware and small glasses and just last night I realized just how much more often I use the small glasses. I grabbed a white wine glass and noticed just how dusty they were from non-use. Plus they can be a real pain to wash. I can't tell you how many that I've broken while washing or knocked over in the drying rack.

this online store has a really nice assortment of Moroccan tea glasses that are quite reasonably priced:

katie, I always break my wine glasses too. When the last one breaks, I'm not getting anymore.

Thanks for the tea glass link, kungfookimmie.

I friend was insulted once when I served a fabulous italian red in slightly fluted tumblers. She said, "so I'm not good enough to break out the nice crystal, huh?" I was stunned! In Italy, table wine is frequently served in simple glasses -- something like what we call juice glasses. It took a trip to Italy the following year for her to find out it was true, though she'd never admit the wine tasted just fine without a stem.

Your selection of Goats Do Roam is a great choice for unpretentious drinking too.

If you want a stem, something big and fat like an Ikea Rättvik holds up well in the dishwasher.

I love my small glasses however, the glass size and shape can affect how the wine tastes. If it is a new wine or nicer bottle I like to use my big round glasses. Wine is supposed to be enjoyed so if you enjoy it in a small water glass then so be it.

Here is a video blog on testing the wine glass shapes with the same wine. He is a great wine expert but I could do without his swishing.

Oh my gosh! I am the biggest AT addict in South Africa and often get miserable that the goodies posted are not available in SA. But look, "Goats do Roam" wine, horray! This wine farm is just up the road from my home in Cape Town... I feel a thirst coming on :)

i'd like to attest to the value of a wine glass shape. when sipping a really fantastic red in a restaurant my dining partner and i couldn't stop raving, after switching glasses to share the wine around more we noticed slight differences in the glasses (one was for a syrah and another for a bordeaux) and the taste was surprisingly quite different.

this was a rather expensive wine and i won't buy it for myself until i've got the proper glasses... but for everyday guzzling i'm happy to use my ikea cups any day.

i much prefer to drink my wine out of a stemless glass. i have Riedels, but occasionally i'll pour some white wine in a little juice glass.
