Modern Glass by Joe Cariati

Modern day genie bottles in the colors of a carefully curated rainbow are the forte of Joe Cariati, a glassblower whose uses a very old process to create work that looks contemporary, fresh and light as air. While similar in some ways to Elizabeth Lyons' "Big Jars" (if you like those, you most likely like these too!)...

...there is a delicacy and elegant "edge" to these vessels that distinguish them as a very singular style.

According to Joe's bio, the modern look of his work is achieved through keeping things simple - he writes, "I'm not a "fussy" glass blower, I cannot stand spending time on surface decoration or frilly techniques. For me, the purity and essence of the process of glassblowing is immediate, there is a sense of urgency, the glass must be blown while it's hot! There are no breaks, there is no time to rest, no lull. My approach is to craft the glass quickly and efficiently; clean, pure, simple and beautiful."

The photos shown above are from the Spring 2009 collection - more images from that collection and work from Fall 2008 along with more info can be found at: Joe Cariati

These are gorgeous, and the photography is unreal! I'll take some bottles AND one of those photos, please.

Love these photographs. He really should consider selling prints for those of us who like his aesthetic but can't afford his glassware (or are too klutzy to risk it).

I love the glassware. Just a question -- are the photos highly retouched or are they just that good?

Perfect .... ah, there's the rub.

To me, handblown equals irregular, imperfect, full of character. These are beautiful but not desireable, IMO.
