Seperated at Birth?: Hadley and Marta Glassware

2007-09-13-hadley.jpgGood news...and more good news. When Martha By Mail stopped selling in 2005, there were a few items that were sorely missed.

We distinctly remembered folks online at AT lamenting the fact that "Martha's Favorite Glasses" were no longer available; people were getting panicky about the breaking of one of the precious few they had left.

Well they are back, officially...and maybe unofficially too....

Officially Martha's Favorite Glasses are called the "Hadley" glasses and are back as part of the new product line sold at Macy's. Pictured above, they are sold in sets of 4. The set of large glasses is $19.99 and the set of small glasses is $15.99.

2007-09-13-marta.jpgWell today, when planning this post, we went back to check the original AT post about the glasses that we remembered and we found an interesting bit of information in the comments.

An "unofficial" version of the glasses is available at CB2. Called "Marta" they come in three sizes and are sold singly. The cooler is $2.50, the juice is $1.50 and the double old-fashioned is $1.95.

Are they the same glasses? No idea, but obviously they are similar enough to please some of the commenters as a substitute for what they remembered as Martha's favorites. Either way, we like the look of this super thin, super simple glassware, and are happy to present both choices.

Quite pretty!

I'm thus even happier with the set of glasses I found two years ago on clearance at Target that look just like the smaller set but I paid $5 for eight glasses. I love them and guests do as well.

Maybe Target still carries a set of glasses like those.

Crate and Barrel used to sell what to me were the identical glasses and I bought them. However I recently went back to get more and while it looks like they carry the same style, the sizes are different. The small tumbler now has a wider diameter, and you'd have to have the hands of a giant to hold them comfortably. Not sure if this is a permanent change, or a stocking issue, but this was my experience about a month ago.

I have a beef with the CB2 glasses. I _love_ the way they look (I think I pulled a photo from a magazine years ago), and the people working at the store have told me over and over how strong and durable they are. I don't know if they have instructions to push this glass or what, but it seems every time I walk in for a replacement, some well-intentioned salesperson gushes about how they're a best-seller and virtually unbreakable.

Let me tell you, unbreakable they are not. Granted, for something that appears to have the strength of tissue paper, they do okay, but I've had them shatter in the dishwasher, for goodness sake. Twice now they've cracked while I've been holding them (no extreme temperature involved, and I'm not _that_ strong).

To their credit, the folks at CB2 did replace the glasses once after I explained, while only looking at me like I was mildly crazy. I haven't had the nerve to go back with my sad collection of two broken juice glasses and a cracked tumbler...

If any ATers work at CB2, what gives? Am I the only poor fool with this problem?

can anyone tell me if either version have completely flat bottoms?

we are in need of new glasses... our current glasses have a concave bottom, so when they are flipped over in our crappy dishwasher they collect water/crumbs which dries on the glass and it annoys me...

i love how sleek these look, and they have gotten rave reviews on cb2's site but i need to know about the bottom of the glass!
