apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Advice for Decorating Space with Unusual Details?
Good Questions

Q: I am looking for some advice on how to go about hanging photos, art, and arranging my furniture to best use the space in my new apartment. The apartment is in a mansion built in 1850, has a lofted bedroom (A Frame), large central living room with windows encompassing the 3 sides of the room...

Hardwood floors abound and the entry way/kitchen has 11-12ft ceilings but is not huge. The bathroom has the high ceilings as well and space to hang. Place has ~750 sq ft; Furniture wise, I have a 3 seat brown leather Sofa, off white leather chair, 2 end tables, 30in flat screen & 3 wooden chairs. You can see a video tour of the apartment here.

I'm pretty desperate for some help. I'm a 25 year old guy, abstract artist, but I really am not that good at interior design. I think I have the things to make this space a really cool space, but I don't know how to place them to make this apartment become a great living space.

Thanks for your help!!!

The beams are awesome! Make them the focal point! It's sort of funny that you're an abstract artist, because the beams remind me of Franz Kline. Anyway, that's a great-looking main space!

Bill, this is a gem of a bldg. And an amazingly reasonable rent (by Boston standards). Congrats on your classy new space! Don't know how much *stuff* you have, but it looks like storage space may be an issue, esp. in the kitchen. I'm going to take a look at your video again before making any specific suggestions. (Great video, BTW!) More later!

I don't get it?? The video is not the same apt -- sloped wood walls, carpet, round turret room.

let's see....

i would designate the area of the living room closest to the windows as a studio space. not a messy studio, but a space that is well organized with shelving, etc. I assume any completed pieces would be displayed throughout the apartment.

also, it would be quirky and cool to rig some tension wires across the smaller spaces within those slanted beams so that you can hang smaller paintings.

obviously a paint job would be nice (kitchen), but that's up to the landlord.

That apartment is a find! It has so much character built right in! My very first thought when I saw the video was the built-in shelving could be a great focal point. I love this method of mixing art with storage. It's a great way to not loose that extra shelving, but to still be able to display some great artwork. That place looks like it will be a lot of fun to decorate! Good luck!

I'm with cindycindy on this one-- no way the video and the pics are from the same apartment. But he has this video tour on youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1wSMWvc9aI and I think it's the right one. Definitely prefer the *right one* over the one originally posted.

This is Bill, I did post the wrong video, my bad on that. The link was from the wrong page on the landlord's wesbite. Nevertheless: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1wSMWvc9aI is the right video.

I appreciate your help with it, and as far as how much stuff I have, I mean I have enough of my own original art/photographs to completely cover the walls; Like I said above I have a brown leather 3 seat couch, a large white leather chair, brown ottoman, a few end tables (that could be phased out too), and a 30in flat screen.

Thanks again!

white white white, and some of it downright high glossy white: paint the dark beams glossy white, the beadboard glossy, pull all of it together with bright bright white.

lose the kitchen trolley island (cupboards white too, but I'd lose the cupboards too and put in open shelving

all your stuff will work in it.

cool place.

I would hang a curtain on the kitchen side of the triangular beams in the living room and you could hang art in front of the curtain. I would put the couch on the kitchen side of the living room. I would put your art supplies and easel on the side of the living room of the stairs/ladder. Place your white chair facing the couch with it's back to your art area.

Or use the kitchen by the windows for your studio area.

Beautiful place!
