Can I Really Store My Motorcycle in My Loft?
Good Questions

moto110309.jpgQ: I learned to ride a motorcycle this summer - its simply amazing! In the winter most riders store their bikes in garages or storage facilities. I was wondering if its possible to keep it in my unit so I can stare at it all season. I live in a loft that I own, a real loft, not psuedoloft-like apt. It's the Shoemaker Building in Avondale (Belmont and Pulaski). I realize that in order to keep my living room from smelling like gas/oil I will need to drain the liquids, but...

...that's recommended for winter storage anyhow. I see this in movies all the time, is it real and can I do it? Any recommendation, suggestions and warnings would be appreciated, thank you.

If the bike is off you really won't smell anything. If you really want to make sure you don't have fumes in your loft, put some fuel stabalizer in a full tank ride it around till it goes mid level and than store. Unless you have a leak, you will not smell the oil or gas. Also, get a race stand, so the tires are no on one side for months.

Have fun staring at your machinery.

I don't see why not, especially if you can roll it in and out without starting the engine. My husband used to park in the lobby of his office every day. It was never a problem.

My dad and his best friend used theirs as dining room chairs and had a third one in pieces in the bedroom. They lived in a L-shaped apartment building and just brought them up using the elevator, located at the far end of the hallway. I would just disconnect the battery.

We store over 35 motorcycles in a renovated/heated barn north of Toronto and I can tell you there's nothing wrong as long as you drain the fluids out. If you live where cold weather hits it is actually good for your bike. Your home is warm and being out of sub zero weather will help your bike run easier and longer without problems that cold weather can cause.

And here is a tip... we made Bike stands out of wood, painted them black and placed full length mirrors underneath to show off their beauty. You should look into bike stands as said above... flat spots on your tires are not fun and can easily be avoided. Good luck getting it into your loft, that should raise some eyebrows!

Uh, It's illegal in Chicago. I'm pretty sure... your bike shop would know.

... That said I stored my scooter in my basement anyway. I asked the landlord and she said yes.

Just drain the gas and/or add fuel stabilizer to the tank. (Draining it is the safer option in case of fire.) REMOVE the battery and keep it charged (you can buy a charger for about $35 at Pep Boys).

I lived in Pilsen while attending college. I parked my moped in the living room of my first floor apartment because I was afraid it would be stolen if I parked it outside. I had a sheet of cardboard under it to protect the floor. It didn't smell like a garage.

People do this all the time. Just drain the fluids, get a battery tender, and dramatic accent lighting, and have fun drooling.

Keep the shiney side up.
