CHI Good Questions: Architectural Significance to This Loft Staircase?

120407loft-stairs1.jpgDear AT,

I just bought a funky home in SLC, Utah, and I've been researching one of the architectural highlights of the home: the loft staircase.

I stumbled upon a forum from 9/06 in which readers were submitting photos and ideas for loft stairs that incorporated storage or other good use of space.

I wanted to share a photo of ours, and also find out if it has a specific name or architectural significance, or if it was just a creative idea that the architect who lived in our home created just for this house.

Thanks!
Melissa

This looks like the architect put his/her own spin on what some people call a loft stair. They are commonly used in small spaces or used to save space.

They are designed similar to ships ladders. Whom ever built your stairs seems to have been putting their creative touch on the the basic formula for loft stairs/ship's ladders. See the links I attached below, they are pictures of other stairs similar in function.
