Sarah Beth sent us an email: "I recently moved to a much larger one-bedroom in Lakeview, and finally have room for a proper kitchen table. I bought a very cute vintage table that I love, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding chairs that will go. I am on a bit of a budget, and I don't want to go too matchy with diner chairs (though vintage diner chairs in a different color might be ok!) I'm open to any suggestions!"

Great find, great space.
Those tables are so hard to complement chair-wise.
I was looking for chairs for my own similar vintage table, and I felt like Ikea was the only budget option.
I love the style of BALSER, but it is only available in brown-black and I think you should go lighter:

Ogla is also available in black only, but this classic shape could work:

Ikea has many similar in shape to the CB2 suggestion.

I second bepsf's suggestion, I think diner chairs (maybe in an apple green if you can find them? Or turquoise!) would go best. It's an adorable table, and we even have the same curtains. :-).

Target has retro diner chairs to starting at about $200 per pair.

i am jealous. i've been stalking craigslist looking for a table like this for a while, only i'm hoping for one with matching chairs and that isn't $400. a girl can dream...
but yes, a simple chair will be best i think. the jake chairs at room & board come in a turquoise, though i think you can find knockoffs for cheaper. the cb2 chair janel recommended looks good too, but only if that's white in the center of your table. off-white might be a bit harder to match.

why do people keep suggesting the herman chair at ikea? it's terribly uncomfortable. please, just, no.

I would hold out for vintage diner chairs as it will really complete the look. You can collect them one or two at a time and then recover them if you want them to match. I have a similar table and just recovered all of my chairs in an off-white vinyl. While I was recovering them we sat on $8 folding chairs from Target.

any such name if you live in SF, the thrift store on Valencia street had this same table last weekend good shape for 70.00

I agree with the sleek and simple route. If you want to make it more cute then add cushions to the chair seat! How about all chrome?

nice table... i'd go with these bad boys... super cheap for them too as they are on sale
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90090355
i'd go with a cpl in red, and a cpl in black for a harlequin feel perhaps. i myself just got the birch ones, super clean look for so little it was robbery!

i think any bentwood type of chair with chrome legs would be appropriate. pottery barn had the morrow chair and i'm sure ikea has something similar. they usually come in a variety of colors and are less expensive.

Navy chair knockoffs from Target would be an affordable and stylish option!

target has these red and creamy vinyl retro dinner chairs too that would be a great option if you want to go that route.

It looks like the table is off white, so you should stay away from white, red and I don't think black would look good either. I love diner chairs, but it's hard to find ones that aren't tacky or ridiculously expensive. Check craig's list, though, I think retro looking diner chairs would look awesome with that table.
I agree with the people that said green or blue (light blue or turquoise in particular). I would probably try to find something that matched one of the colors in my curtains.

I would also suggest stealing the lighter green from your curtians to use on the thoronet(or fake) chairs... and speaking of, it looks like they are tied up and actually long enough for the window, but have you thought of mounting them lower to give yourself a transom look?

hetta13, did you do the recovering yourself or professionally? I got the idea somewhere that it was super expensive so have been using that excuse to swap them out (husband loves the set but I'm ready for a change). My chrome may not be in good enough shape anyway, but it's worth considering if "re-vinyling" the 4 chairs wouldn't break the bank.

Unless you have other items in your house that match, I'd avoid true diner chairs. Otherwise, it may just look like you have a corner of your dining room that screams "OMG, RETRO DINER!!!" and looks to themey. I have a classic diner table--teal blue with the boomerang design. (It looks like this http://www.barsandbooths.com/images/bandbl12.jpg )
In the end, I bought melamine chairs from a school surplus sale. School chairs are a nifty option--they come in a wide array of colors, the chrome matches your table and they are relatively cheap. Just make sure you buy the full-sized ones, not the little ones for kindergarteners! This picture https://www.schooloutfitters.com/catalog/product_family_info/cPath/CAT2_CAT26/pfam_id/PFAM2698looks similar to ours (but ours are brown). At $45, they're quite reasonable, though mine were just $5 each!

Grrr... link got cut off. It's http://www.schooloutfitters.com and search "SO 180" to see the chairs like mine.

This is a beautiful table. It probably has wonderful aged patinas. If you try to put new chairs with new finishes (perfect chrome or bright white) it will make the table look dull.
I would suggest clear lucite chairs.

I have that same table in yellow. We use the Herman chairs from Ikea as I didn't want to spend a lot of money unless I found the "perfect" chairs. I do think the Herman chairs are fairly comfortable, but you have to periodically ensure that everything is still snuggly fitted. I also thought the Herman chair came in apple green which would be very pretty with the red table and your curtains. At $15 a pop, you could get the Herman chairs while you continue to look for something better, which is what I've been doing for almost 6 years now.
