CHI Good Questions: Coffee Table Suggestions?

2008-06-11-coffee.JPGRonald sent in a good question: "I want to put a coffee table--or any other sort of functional, not purely decorative--table, in front of this L-shaped sectional sofa, but I'm stymied. I've detected at least three problems...

First, the right side of the sofa was sized to fit the relatively short wall (under the painting), so there's little depth for a table.

Second, I hate to hide the Oriental rug's center medallion.

Third, I tried a couple of small tables but they look sort of weird because the medallion makes them look off-center---the tables seemed to compete with the medallion, if that's possible. I found a petite clear glass Italian table called an "Easy Curve," but it's pricey. CB2 makes something similar out of acrylic, but I figured I'd scrape the heck out of that in short order.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Please add your suggestions for Ronald to the comments below...thanks!

I suggest a small round table to take the edge off all your sharp angles in the room. The new sofa looks lovely and please post after pics!

I second that comment Monica! Anything with corners might be too much...

I'm also thinking round table and with a glass top. That way you can see the medallion.

Depending on what's out of view, you can shift the rug to more closely match your table's positioning, and take care of your medallion issues.

I don't know how this corner relates to the rest of the room, but why not consider putting the rug at an angle under the sofa to help break up the "squareness"?

I agree w/ the other posters - a table with a glass top might be the best choice - perhaps a Noguchi table?

Or a round table like this one:

I do not like the color of the wall and carpet, they make room looks old and heavy.

It will look nicer with a white wall and a bright color carpet.

I would put a modern coffee tables like a Laccio table.

i agree, a round or oval glass top..

not sure what your budget is...

how about the 36" steel round base with a glass top from room and board for $319

Why not end tables, rather than a coffee table? You're putting a lot of restrictions on a coffee table, but end tables would fit all your requirements and still be functional -- and you wouldn't cover the rug. I'd get two non-matching end tables, and at least one in a kidney-bean shape to break up the squareness.

I agree that a round or oval table is the way to go - but there's too much rug under the sectional...can you pull it out?

I'd put small tables on either side of the sectional and leave the central area open. Coffee tables are a 20th century invention, and it's perfectly possible to have a nice living room without them, as long as there's somewhere else to put down a drink.

A round Moroccan brass tray table would look nice and compliment the Oriental rug.

I would go with a cube ottoman on casters and roll it to another part of the room/house when not needed. I'm fine with the paint color and couch color. My front room is similar but my walls are less gold and I really like the cozy feeling.

Ridiculously expensive and no casters but this is the idea:

http://www.wshome.com/products/p2045/index.cfm?pkey=cuphott

I'd put a tray on top and use it as a coffee table, take the tray off and you've got an ottoman. It could be casual seating in another part of the room.

I do think a round, glass topped coffee table would work too.

does the sofa have to be against the wall? move the sofa into the room, put a glass or acrylic rectangular coffee table in there, maybe a console table behind the sofa, floor lamps for reading. if the view out of the windows are nice, then turn the sofa to face the window.

Acrylic? This was recently here on AT, this is the thinner acrylic version:
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Adair-Acrylic-Coffee-Table/2929530/product.html?

17" deep though, so it might be pushing it a bit.

This might work:
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Acrylic-Nesting-End-Tables-Set-of-3/1995574/product.html?

They are all 13" deep. You can see the center medallion through them, obviously. You CAN keep them together, and even off to the side when not needed. Or spread them out when you have several people over.

I would recommend using coasters with those, with the little rubber feet, so that they don't get too scratched.

Check out other nesting tables too. They have several styles at Overstock to give you ideas.

There is also the Eileen Gray table:
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Eileen-Gray-Stainless-Steel-Accent-Table/2287554/product.html?

It is height adjustable. It's another good table for beverages, but people aren't encouraged to put their feet on it, just by it's appearance. But it's 20" diameter.

I say lose the rug to show off the lovely dark wood floors and then do some smallish natural tables like these: http://www.pfeiferstudio.com/detail.aspx?ID=9&Name=Onde-Stool-Table

I agree with the round, or possibly oval, idea, especially with a glass top.

I agree in changing the wall color and rug both making it all too heavy and dull.
Go with clean white walls and your dark floors look great and no rug at all.

That is a boxy sofa so I would mimic the scale with a coffee table. Round might be ok, oval would seem strange- the oval ends are not heavy enough to balance the sofa. If round I would get thick wood wth some beef to it.

You need some layering and texture. I think a simple plank rectangle table or square made from reclaimed wood to add some depth.
Something in this species of this wood- Even two cubes in the right size-
http://www.vivaterra.com/pls/enetrixp/template_utils.more_product_images_window?pageid_in=2006272

or simple like this-

or two of these-

Love this table by OHIO-see Primco Table
http://www.ohiodesign.com/

Can you move the sofa away from the wall? More floating, add some uplights on the floor behind the sofa and place a wood carved screen (leaning) and some interesting pieces of art, so the up light washes to wall.
Add some pillows in chocolate brown, orange to break up the scale.
Place a recycled glass jug or vase for flowers on table with some books or big ceramic bowl.

I say ottoman. Something sturdy to put your feet on or to put a tray with snacks and drinks.

I saw on a design show: Get a big stone planter, fill it with pebbles about halfway up, cover with small round glass top. Depending on the height of the planter it can serve as an end table or coffee table.

Round leather ottoman with a tray for when you need it to function as a table (drinks or food)... everyone ends up kicking their feet up on a coffee table anyways.

I understand how easy it is to love a piece, but good design sometimes means letting go. I'm talking about the rug. There are some other great ideas above. Without hte rug, you'd have a tom of options. I especially love Lori's suggestion about floating the sofa and light-washing the wall. A couple of inches would make a world of difference. Try it.

Note the look here. This mix of shapes might work for you albeit with smaller scale pieces.

That sectional needs to line up with the window with a sofa table behind it. With a lamp.

I'd also play around with the rug to see if it can't go diagonal (if you move the sectional out, it can.

OR set the sofa itself on the diagonal and pop either a floor lamp or a mirrored screen in that corner.

Tables? Round, glass. The Eileen Gray table was a good idea.

IMO that pale pink in the rug needs to be picked up with something. The inside of the lampshades, maybe. The lampshades can be black. A couple of throw pillows?

It looks like that sofa is in two sections and can be separated into two settees. I'd like to see the rug and sofas placed in the center of the room, facing each other. That would also give you some wall space for a nice piece of furniture and would frame the window. You could then use two small side tables with lamps placed next to the armless ends of the sofas. I think it would make the room look more interesting than having this jammed up against the wall.
