It looks like it is an interpretation of the classic Florence Knoll Lounge Chair (shown above in fabric upholstery - also available in leather), except that the style of the legs is quite a departure from the original. The real deal is runs around $3500. and knockoffs are plentiful, available in all levels of price and quality.
Can anyone ID the chair Matt saw at the car dealership? If so let him know - and also add in any recommendations for similar seating...thanks!
it kind of looks like the chair that would result from a mies van der rohe barcelona chair and a le corbusier club chair having a baby.

This chair looks familiar to me it might of been a chair that Brayton had at one point.
I would estimate that the price would be about $3,000.00 list, take about 40% off for the sell price (including leather).
For that chair in a fabric around $1700.00 list, take about 40% off for the sell.
The first photo from the VW dealership has less material than the second picture and the base is tubular steel, the other chair has a bar stock base so the second chair would be much more expensive.
I don't know where Matt lives but you could send the picture to a furniture dealership in your area and they might be able to find this chair from their library of manufacturers that they represent. Your best bet would be a Herman Miller, Knoll or Steelcase dealer. You can simply find a dealer by going to one of these websites to see who their dealers are.
Here are some other options that are sorta similar.

Just read James reply I was thinking maybe Teknion..good.
Matt you can find a Teknion dealer in your area and request a quote. All of the big manufacturers have dealers and all of these dealers have other lines that they carry in addition to their main manufacturers. The Teknion dealer maybe able to find something similar at a lower price. As a general rule these chairs are designed for commercial interiors so they tend to be more expensive than chairs made for residential use because of the codes required for commercial interiors.
