Jared sent in a good question: "We have recently decided to purchase a vintage chair and need a bit of help deciding on a fabric/color to reupholster it. Currently the only other furniture that we have is the Rochelle couch from Gus Modern in Gosford (shown below the jump), which reads as a dusty greenish/grey, and a media console in black...
The walls of our apartment are white and the floors are bamboo. We would have kept the original fabric but trust me, it's much different in person. Think very worn, nubbly, orange and black. We're leaning towards a lighter cream textured fabric since we want to show off the great teak arm rests and figure a lighter color will resist fading from our large windows. Can you think of a less boring option that will compliment the couch and the console?
Super looking chair - wonderful find! Our first thought is that a patterned upholstery would would be fantastic on that chair. A bold, happy print (think Marimekko) would be a great choice to lighten it up and modernize it.
Readers, what do you think? Please share your ideas with Jared in the comments below...
I'd go with your instinct: cream fabric in a great texture. If you want to go for a bit of patten, do it with a throw pillow that can easily be changed as your tastes/moods (or even your decor) change and evolve.

I think you should stick to your cream idea, you can always get pillows for the sofa or the chair to "make it less boring". Also that way the chair will remain the classic piece it is. However, I think you should get some fabric with a very rich or bold texture. That will make it more fun close up and make it blend less into the wall. When you choose a color, (if you end up going cream), make sure it isn't a red or pink based one.

Love your cream idea. It's such a cool shape and the color would highlight the form rather than compete with it if you used a pattern. Just my opinion ;)

That chair would look fabulous in a bright cobalt blue.

Agree with a creamy color and some great pillows. But what is the palette fore the rest of your house -- art? rugs? lamps?
Room and board has a similar chair in 5 fabrics, and multiple colors. You can play with their color switcher and try some on for size.

Maharam's Textiles of the 20th Century collection would be fun to consider - great designs, authentic to the period. They have a great website for browsing, last time I checked.

Okay, this isn't a tip, but really want to say that I love your chair!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I would have loved to choose a cobalt type blue except I don't want the chair to compete with a very large print that we recently purchased (which is a very similar color). We also considered Maharam but that is out of our price range currently.
KimG- It's funny that you mention the quinn chair, as that was our fall back if we couldn't find a vintage chair that we loved. We don't currently have rugs but we are leaning towards something like the paolo or the spencer (I prefer the spencer). The rest of our home is pretty modern, but since we just moved everything is taking it's time coming together. It seems as if every piece depends on the other and most times each piece of furniture takes about 6 weeks to get here so it's taking a lot longer then expected.

Don't give up on Maharam. You won't need a lot of yardage so check out some of the ebay stores. Some of them will send swatches too. Also, try www.Modern-Fabrics.com . They were written up in Ready Made. I dealt with them though ultimately didn't buy b/c I need 15 yards for a sofa. Still they were quite helpful and willing to work with me. It's a great chair! And check out the Maine Cottage Furniture site; they have some terrific fabrics on sale for $15/yard.

Something either darker or lighter than the couch.
Something with texture, like a wool boucle, a mohair, or a felted wool.
