Christina needs some leads: "I am looking for an expert in soundproofing in Chicago. I'd like to have my ceiling decoupled. I've talked to some contractors, but they do not have the level of expertise I am looking for. Through internet research I find that I am more educated than they are on the subject. Do you happen to know where I might find an expert in soundproofing who could complete the decoupling?"

I am having trouble finding a similar resource in boston.
not for decoupling ( our celing is already too low) but for our party walls.
so far I have found a guy who can fill the gaps with vermiculite...but that is it.
I have also tried all those "mass loaded vinyl" sights...but can't seem to find anyone who uses the stuff!

You might want to try calling local recording studios (Electrical Audio, Kingsize, etc) and asking them for a lead/reference.

Try The Huff Company in Lake Bluff:

well, one way of doing it is by hanging some new drywall off of some RSIC clips attached to the ceiling.

These would effectively decouple the new ceiling from the old. These are used a lot in home theaters to prevent sound from propagating to the rest of the house.
Here is an article as well:

I'm trying to find the same information for my timber loft in Chicago. I'm part of a pretty large building, and just posted a note downstairs about assembling a group of people to all compare notes/purchase ceiling insulation services at the same time (and to hopefully benefit from a group discount). Feel free to contact me if you want to share local research: taylor ((at)) taylorhokanson ((dot)) com

If any of you happens to find a someone who could provide a soundproofing solution geared towards ceilings or consultant who could provide a possible solution, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't think that the builders who originally constructed the building where I live used any soundproofing material between floors. As a consequence, I constantly hear the individual living above me. Either walking around, using the bathroom, or enjoying "night-time" activies. I am not opposed to having someone come and rip out my existing ceiling to accomplish this, but I don't want to have to take out a second mortgage to pay for it.
