CHI Good Questions: Thrift Stores Near the Loop?

2008-03-25-thrift.jpgPaula's going to be in town this weekend and has a question for the AT readers: I have some time to kill in the Loop (vicinity of Chicago & Rush) on Saturday afternoon and was wondering if the readers of AT:Chicago knew of any decent thrift/resale shops in the area?

We haven't been in so we can't say if it is a "goodie" or not, but there is a Goodwill in the West Loop at 1201 W. Washington which isn't right in the neighborhood you mentioned, but is not too far.

Can anyone share other thrift stores in or near the loop with Paula? Let her know in the comments....

Not to be picky, but I wouldn't really call Chicago @ Rush the "Loop"...

Paula, are you looking for clothing or furniture?

Not exactly in the loop but these thrift stores are in Chicago and are messy but have hidden designer treasures...

Fort Pitt and Coopers hotel resale in Pilsen - especially if your looking for something basic or looking for a project, there are some hidden treasures, you can't beat the prices. Threads on Milwaukee is great for used furniture you never know what you'll find there. Are you also looking for clothing?

For furniture and dishes, check out the Salvation Army on Union by Halsted. It's right by the Grand blue line stop.

Hey Kathryn -
I'm looking mostly for furniture or home accessories.

You should go to P.O.S.H. at State and Ontario (two blocks west of Rush and 4 blocks south of Chicago). It's not a thrift shop, but you can get some really great housewares and antiques, which have been salvaged from hotels and I'm assuming from estate sales. You can definitely find something there that's cool and really unique for under $20. Try checking in the way back, in the corners -- I found a cool lustreware vase there for a friend of mine for under $15. poshchicago.com

There is a second hand store about three doors east of the intersection of Chicago and Rush on the north side of Chicago ave. It's called Hidden Treasures and benefits Northwestern Memorial Hospital. They have tchochkes and some small furniture. The S.A. on Grand has a wider selection of what you're looking for but can be pretty abstruse in it's pricing-$40 for a broken light fixture from Target with the $29.99 pricetag still on it-but a deal still turns up now and then. P.O.S.H. is worth the trip. Good luck!
