CHI Good Questions: Who Makes Slipcovers?

Nicole sent in a good question for the crowd: I want some white slipcovers for my living room furniture but don't trust myself to do a good enough job. Does anyone know of a good source?

Nicole, here are a few places to start your research: Cover Up, at 919 W. 34th (312.563.0353) offers custom slipcovers as does Oakley Interiors at 424 N. Oakley (312.243.4941).

Wherever you go, get separate covers for the cushions, or you'll be tucking and fussing your slipcover every time someone sits on it.

i think i book-marked this after seeing it on apt therapy, but who knows!

i used true artists canvas (i think it was from fredrix) that i first used Rit color remover on, and after thoroughly rinsing twice in the machine, i bleached...i calculated the yardage, and used the same amount of Rit remover ,and separately, the chlorine bleach (you don't want a chemical reaction) on each piece. this creates a truly washable, pre-shrunk fabric for durable slipcovers. i also dried it on air fluff (so they would not shrink) after completed. i did NOT use the above company, but was impressed by their examples.

www.stretchandcover.com is a great website. They have great advice about how to make it look not slipcovered. They also offer inexpensive cushion covers and have options for wing back chairs along with the regular sofa and others.

My neighbor had his sofa recovered by Mario's Upholstery on Belmont (just east of Damen) and was pretty happy with it.

I had a woman working for me who made the best slipcovers by just going to a customer's home, measuring and cutting and sewing at her own shop. My former customers still rave about how well they have held up.
Nothing beats custom and you may be surprised how reasonable it is. Slipcovers were always less expensive than reupholstery. Don't get any you have to just tuck in, you need the cushions covered separately.

Dear Aboudreaux,

Sorry to dissapoint but the furniture is actually green. I think the flash of my camera sort of washed it out. But anyway, the furniture is from Carson's (half price sale!) and the manufacturer is Bauhaus USA. (http://www.bauhaususa.com/)

Is Pete's Upholstery still in business on Lincoln in Chicago? I found them while working for a company that designed model homes. The prices were lower by far than most places and the owner, Victor, is great to work with. Highly recommended!!

there is also a little place in oak park if that's in your area (don't know if they come to you to measure but I'm guessing they do).
