Good Question Revisited: Before and After Credenza Project

Credenza Area - Before
Alison wrote in with a question a while ago before tackling a floating IKEA cabinet install, which was inspired by Andreas' loft tour and very similar to the one Sarah recently posted a How To for. We love question follow ups and this is a great one - the photos of Alison's project look amazing. Check them out below the jump:

So sleek and modern looking - really nice job, Alison. Here is what her email had to say, "Thanks so much for posting my question on Apartment Therapy a couple of weeks ago about mounting Ikea cabinets as sideboards. While we haven't decided which solution to use to hide the screws on top yet, the credenza is mounted and looks great. I included a before picture as well; it's a huge improvement. We haven't decided which art we're going to put on/around it yet, but so far we're really pleased. Thanks again!"

We think this is such a genius project - and while we know it isn't an easy one, a how-to like Sarah's can really help, the price is right and extra storage is always a bonus.

Thanks for the update, Alison!

looks good - well done. I like that dresser, though, where'd you get, and where'd it go?

Alison--

Good job - now just get your local glass shop to cut a piece of 1/4" glass with a flat edge to fit the top. Paint one side white to match your cabinets and when it dries place it on top (painted side down) and you'll have a perfectly durable finished top.

i agree with bepsf. to add to that, i would make sure you get the glass tempered and have the glass shop round the corners so the glass is safer.

uh...is that a biohazard symbol on the little red table between the chairs?

Thanks everyone! amt230, we liked the dresser too, but our house is pretty small and it took up a lot of space. We're now using it for linen storage. My husband bought it at a local furniture store before we were together. bepsf and canova, any special process to paint the glass (priming, special paint, etc)? It sounds like a great idea, I'd like to give it a try. RedMaiko, that is a biozhazard symbol on the red table, and actually it's an entire biohazard container.

LOVE the color combos, despite that being a biohazard container. Hope you got it new! ;)

A much better improvement! Love it and am actually thinking of doing the same to my place.

Alison,
This looks really great! Your room set-up is similar to my living room...I'm curious as to where you put your tv in the "after" shot?

karazy, thanks! And that's a fair question. We gave up "TV" over a year ago (we still have a TV, but we don't get any channels and just use it to watch Netflix), so we moved the TV upstairs to this cozy room we have that is kind of oddly shaped because of the pitch in our roof and made it into a TV den. We don't have a TV downstairs anymore.

What sized cabinets are those? They look more squarish than regular kitchen cabinets.

@ jenzoe:... since we just tackled a cabinet project, i'll post the link to ikea's fridge-top cabinets that are 24in deep (with perfectly square, knoll-credenza-ish doors):

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39811895

used with some cover panels (or doors as cover panels) on the sides, top and bottom, these would indeed make a nice piece (or glass on the top as suggested above -- a nice tip, especially the tempered part).

since we finished off a cabinetry project this weekend, we're really familiar with the selection... for the wall-credenza, a 24in deep cabinet might be nice (to hold AV gear) -- and the 30X15X24 gives you knoll-esque square doors. look to the fridge-top cabinets (link below) and perhaps use cover panels (or doors as cover panels on the sides and another for the top (the glass idea above is also a good one... double points for the tempered tip)... or to continue the knoll look use marble (or stone, richlite, concrete, silestone, terrazzo, etc.). one of these with nexus yellow brown doors/sides and a marble top (or blanco-maple silestone) would be quite nice (and with a MCM flair).
