Good Question Revisited: Concealing a Built-in A/C Unit

100608mirror.jpgPoking around AT's archives, we found this good question that we totally related to: How to hide the monstrously ugly a/c unit?

100608mirrorac2.jpgIn our bedroom, there's a wall unit that we've never used (and probably won't), but we are reluctant to deal with its removal just yet. The issues evened out, though, as my husband and I had a giant mirror that we weren't so confident hanging (this sucker is massive and heavy).

Our solution came without thinking much about it - upon moving in, we propped the mirror against the wall, in front of the ugly a/c. We liked the look and the ease of the solution, and still live with it this way six months later.

Thing about hiding or blocking them? You block good air ciruclation. Come summer and spring, you have to unblock it. Now that it's fall and winter time, you can go ahead, but know that it's only for a bit.

What do you do when the unit is under a window? You can't block the window with a giant mirror.

If it's under a window, get a low bench or bookcase to run under the window and block it. Clearly if you use the unit, it will need to be moved, so maybe have the furniture on casters for easy moving.

I've got a wall unit smack in the lower center of my focal living room wall. Literally, it's straight ahead of you when you walk into the room. I put up a decorative folding screen in front of it. In the winter, it adds a nice touch to the room, and it's lightweight enough that if it's brutally hot, it's easily moved.

Place an antique-looking small authentic handmade SILK (so it wont be so heavy and wont block the air if you decide to use the AC unit) rug.You can get a good one @ eBay at a very reasonable price.I got both of mine under $60 (but that was 7yrs ago ).

we went on en eichler tour this weekend and someone abutted a shelving unit and arranged the shelves to frame the AC (then put stuff in front of it when not in use)...
