Good Questions: Suggestions for New Bedding?

bedq2011509.JPGA good question from Elizabeth: My fiance and I recently moved to Chicago and we find ourselves with a large bedroom. It has inspired me to make our bed as heavenly and comfortable as possible as we register for our wedding this summer. However...I don't even know where to begin...

Our comforter now is a fairly thin goosedown-alternative with a duvet cover over it. I suppose I like the look, but I'm ready for a change and I'm sick of waking up cold every night. I think that I'd like to go with mostly-white bedding, and add color with throws and pillows. My questions are: (a) is that the right move? (b) what are some good examples of mostly white bedding? and (c) what are some good tips for having a luxurious bed, aside from the obvious of having high thread-count sheets?

Please share your ideas and suggestions for bedding with Elizabeth in the comments below...

I have heard with thread count, anything above about 300 isn't worth paying more for. Another thing that DOES make a difference is the type of cotton. Egyptian or Pima (Supima) cotton both have longer fibers that weave into softer, denser fabrics.

I don't personally love all white bedding (I think it tends to get dirty and little spots and things), but it can look amazing when done right. I'd say if you're going for a mostly white bed, paint the room, or at least the wall right behind the bed, even if it's a pale color. Texture is also essential with monochrome, particularly white, to prevent a feeling of sterility. Look for interesting weaves or stitching: stripes are clean and can be quite subtle.

Whatever you do to the bed, I think the biggest difference to the room will be what you put around the bed. Get some matching bedstands to 'frame' the bed. Put some rugs down: at least one on the side of the bed closest to the door, and perhaps define a reading nook in the room.

Also, the chair and particularly the little bookshelf(?) next to it seem a bit small for the room, especially right next to those lovely, giant windows. The chair would be nice with a small writing desk, maybe in another space, but I think that corner calls for a larger, comfy reading chair.

For added luxury and warmth in the bed, try a 'featherbed' (which can be made of down alternatives).

There was just a good post on AT about demystifying thread count, and how 400tc is really the highest without "cheating." Here: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/bedroom/interpreting-thread-count-with-julian-tomchin-the-new-york-times-1809-073442

AT also usually has some pretty good hotel bedroom roundups, but the house tours are usually pretty good for inspiration, too. Like Summer and Josh's .

Basically, I peruse ApartmentTherapy and save images of bedrooms I like, which gives me plenty of inspiration. Maybe it'll work for you.

I love the bedding.

A floor-length colored window treatment would pull some of the colors out.

I don't think the chair is too small, just a funny style for that room. Try something less "sterile."

Ditch the pussy... willow, that is.

Get proper nightstands and a headboard.

Ditch the lamps- put in a ceiling fixture.

Get curtains.

Wallpaper!

Creating a luxurious bed is a very healthy investment in your wellbeing. You spend such a large portion of your life in bed, and being well rested helps you get the most out of the rest of your life.

As for the bedding, you don’t have to buy a mattress that costs more than your car in order to get a glorious nights’ sleep. The secret to those dreamy 5-star hotel beds is what goes *on* the mattress: padded mattress covers, pillowtops or featherbeds and quality sheets go a long way in taking a ordinary mattress from basic to blissful. These “extras” are all readily available and very reasonably priced nowadays.

I really like these products: https://www.privatequarters.net/repsites/frm_replicated_content.aspx?page_id=PRODUCTS

I sell them in my design boutique & use them in my own home. They are affordable, beautiful and entirely hypoallergenic (including the down).

Thanks for the insight so far! We just moved into our condo about five months ago, so it's a work in progress. We got matching nightstands just yesterday, actually. Too poor for a "real" bed and/or headboard (I'm one of the unemployed masses at the moment), but maybe I should try registering for that!

I dunno, I sort of love my chair. Maybe the picture doesn't do it justice... :)

My favorite thing in the room is that old chest against the window - we got it for 20 bucks at a second-hand store, stripped the paint, and added dark brown details.

My husband and I are newlyweds... so we have gone through the new sheet thing.

We recently got these as a gift. Organic and VERY comfortable and soft: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p11402/index.cfm?pkey=csolid%2Dsheet%2Dsets

For white bedding, I love the look. Maybe with a nice color trim? (sans monogram) http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p5885/index.cfm?pkey=ff048

And lastly, The Company store is my fav. They have a lot of nice down alternative stuff: http://www.thecompanystore.com/parent/Comforters Luxury/3103/CS94X/

I have all white bedding and I love my bed, it is so comfy.

I have a white down comforter and use white Wamsutta bedsheets. Wamsutta has never done me wrong and they never pill or look old regardless of how many washings. I have 4 standard size pillows on my bed and I just stack 1 on top of the other on each side. There is also a white Nate Berkus bedskirt.
This winter I have a colorful quilt that I lay at the end and throw that across the top before I go to bed. It is the softest warm and cozy sleep ever :)

I love my superking size bed - it's like sleeping in a giant marshmallow. To accomplish this, I bought a thick (three inch) memory foam mattress; Egyptian cotton sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers; six goose down pillows and two goose down duvets. Everything is white but I haven't found it to be a chore to keep clean.

Having an upholstered headboard really adds to the luxury of the bed. It means you have a soft surface to lean your head against. If you aren't getting a new mattress, I highly recommend a feather bed. As for sheets, I love my bamboo sheets, they are smooth like high thread count cotton sheets but almost silky. Since you are looking at all white, get multiple sets of sheets and duvets so you don't feel like you are always doing laundry. Lastly, add texture to the all white scheme with a cable knit throw, faux fur or some heavy weight linen.

Get a white or off-white bedspread (I like the Indian cotton ones they have at IKEA), and then you can have any color sheets you like under there!

Congrats on the great natural light in the bedroom. :)

I love the Sanford Burrows bedding. White background with just a little color to make them pop. I love that they're embroidered.
