Good Questions: Affordable Chicago Places for Plants and Flowers?

081308flowershome.jpgCaitlin sent in a good question: I live in Chicago and flowers and plants are expensive. Where are some good (reasonably priced) nurseries and places to buy pretty flowers?

We agree that plants and flowers tend to be pricey - especially in the city. On a recent excursion to Grayslake flea market, we scored a carload of plants for under $20. But, if you can't get out of the city, we suggest hitting up estate sales or demolition sales, which often get rid of every last thing in and around the house - including plants. You can even dig up plants on the home's grounds, and make an offer on the price. Often times you'll pay next to nothing. If tracking these down sounds like too much work, how about Green Grocer or Grand Street Gardens as suggested by AT editor Sarah?

If anyone has specific (reasonably priced) shop suggestions for Caitlin, chime in!

Best bet for flowers (at least cut ones) are the farmers markets which can be found throughout the city on various days. You can also find outdoor plants (for your yard) at some of them as well.

Otherwise if your looking for indoor house plants, IKEA and Home Depot surprisingly have a good selection that aren't too pricey

I recommend checking out some of the smaller, neighborhood Farmer's markets because you'll find prices a little more reasonable. Also, as always, craigslist. I have always liked the fresh flowers at Dominik's.

Trader Joes and Whole Foods.

Costco (if you're a member or know someone who is) has affordable bouquets and flowers. Their plant section is hit-or-miss but if it's a hit the bargains are good.

The least expensive cut flowers I've seen have been at Trader Joe's and occasionally at Aldi supermarkets - much cheaper than Dominick's or Jewel.

For potted plants, I go to garage and estate sales. Huge, well cared for plants for a few bucks, and lots of homeowners will give you cuttings free if you admire plants that aren't for sale.
