Dear AT,
I just moved to a studio but I am not quite sure how to place the furniture. I need to fit sofa, ottoman, desk, chair, coffee table, side table, bookshelf and small entertaiment center. I am enclosing the floor plan. The unit is 550 sq/ft and one of the closets (next to kitchen) was replaced by a murphy bed. Thanks in advance for your comments!

Dear Silvana,
550 sq. ft. is pretty significant for a studio, especially given the fact that your dining area is separate and one closet was replaced with a murphy bed (we'd love to see that once you've settled in!). Not knowing how large your furniture is, it's hard to say what should go where. As a general rule, though, we abide by placing the most-used furniture by the windows if possible. For instance, if you work at home, we'd put your desk in front of the windows.
Since your murphy bed will create a "bedroom" when in use, you don't want to take up that side of the room with anything you'll have to move or things that will get in the way of a simple respite.
It's likely that the sofa will only make sense (and fit) along the longest wall (in front of the bathroom) or under the windows. If this is true, it's important to create clusters of space: where you relax, where you work, etc. And remember one of AT's home cure mantras (Chapter 2): Energy should flow throughout your space, not get stuck in one place. A straight line of open space through your main room will not make your studio feel like a home. So try to not line everything up against the walls. If this means getting rid of something or swapping sizes and styles of pieces, then this is one option you may want to consider.
Readers, take it away!
This looks a lot like the studio I had when I lived in Hyde Park! (Except you have a bigger kitchen.) Okay, assuming the wall is long enough (looks like around 7' at least?), I would put the sofa along the wall adjoining the bath. The entertainment center can be tucked into the corner by the window, and I'd also try to find a small chair to face the sofa. How about dressing up the desk a little bit so that it can serve as a console table, and placing it near the entrance?

What a great place for the Murphy bed!
If it were my place, I think I might actually make the "dining room" the office - I'd put the desk directly in front of (up against) that window and bookshelves on the long wall of that room. It's so much more pleasant to look out a window than at a wall from a desk, and, for me, I'd much rather contain the "visual noise" of a desk area in the one separate room you have, rather than staring at my desk/cords/etc. when I'm relaxing or entertaining in the main room. I also think it'll seated meals are more pleasant (and better lit) in the main room, and you never have to stare at kitchen stuff even when you're using the "dining" room well.
I'd then put my dining/multipurpose table with a nice lamp directly in front of the two main room windows, with just two chairs (one in each corner, facing into the room). Two "extra" chairs can go in the "office" room.
I'd then put the sofa along the wall between the Murphy bed and the entrance to the "office" room, the entertainment center on the wall across (to the right of the closet door) - where it can be seen from both the sofa and the bed, and I'd add at least one upholstered (but small-scale) side chair to make a conversation area with the sofa, and add a nice slim console table along the "bottom" wall, just a tiny bit clear of where the foot of the bed will land.
I doodled all of it out, please let me know if you'd like me to email the doc (since I have no idea how to post images).
Just my two cents, regardless. Congrats on the place, and please do keep us posted on how you make the space your own!

Hi Silvana
Would it be possible to use your bookshelf or entertainment center as a room divide between the area by the windows (most likely where your sofa would go) and your bed area? Perhaps the desk could then go on the back side of what you would use as a room divide. If the back of your bookshelf, for example, has seen better days, you could just put some fabric across the back of it which could be the backdrop for your desk or if you decide to put your desk in your dining area, then you could still use the back of the bookshelf (or entertainment center) in some kind of fun way (paint it and put some pictures on the back so you see them from the bed, whatever. Hope this makes sense. It sounds like your place is large enough to pull this off.
