Good Questions: Chair & Media Center Suggestions?

dquestion072908.jpgD sent us an email: I am looking for suggestions on chairs and a entertainment center that would go well with my red Natuzzi sofa (71" sofa) and b/w rug from CB2. I am considering black Barcelona chairs and want a entertainment center that will be great for my flat screen, dvd, cable box (40"), but will also provide some shelving for books and pictures. Any ideas come to mind?

For your entertainment center/bookcase needs - I'd recommend that you find a retailer in your area that installs custom wall systems/cabinets using the Rakks system.

http://www.rakks.com/portfolio/portfolio_res2.html.

As for your Barcelona Chairs - I'd be inclined to keep it light and go for the white leather rather than the black, but to be honest, armchairs would be much more comfortable to sit in.

And now the rug: Although it's nice, it appears that you made the common mistake of choosing a rug that's too small. You really need the 8x10 rather than the 5x8 pictured, and the front legs of the furniture needs to be on the rug (at least) - Otherwise, you'll be left with "Floating Rug Island" syndrome.

I have a similar red sofa, rug and a black barcelona chair and the look is awesome. Any of the Eames chairs would look great too! As for a media center with some storage, I would recommend a credenza or sideboard. This will keep your tv at eye level for maximum viewing pleasure and provide storage for all the other boxes and some books. There are so many options for this that you'll have to look around and see what you like. You can go the expensive route from somewhere like Room and Board or go on the cheap at somewhere like Ikea.

Go with a low sideboard/buffet style media center with cabinet doors. If the piece was originally meant for dishes instead of your dvd player, have cord management holes drilled in the back. Avoid units that only feature drawers or open shelving. The benefit of the cabinet doors is that you can keep all of the ugly mismatched black box electronics, dvds, cds, and cables out of sight. This improves the look of a room tremendously. As a starting point, I would recommend finding something along the lines of DWR's Sussex Credenza:

http://www.dwr.com/product/categories/storage/credenzas - sideboards/sussex-credenza.do

My opinion is that this particular credenza is probably a few inches too tall, but it gives you an idea of the sort of thing I am talking about.

Oh, and don't just search "media centers." Expand your search to include buffets, sideboards (dining area) and credenzas (office furniture).

We just got this media center from Crate and Barrel:

I don't know if it will go well with your b/w rug, but we like it a lot. Good luck!

I purchased the Titan Media stand a while back and haven't looked back. I did have a very small trepidation on having the components out but the cord management on this is perfect (no cords are visible at all, either behind the compinents or on the floor). I have an 42" LCD, HD Tivo (top glass shelf), slim Audio Component (2nd glass shelf), 400 Disc DVD Player and Xbox (Bottom) and it looks very good (to me):

I would take pictures but am moving on Thursday and it's all packed up...

Yeah, do the Barcelona chairs or the Wassily... but the overall effect is going to be a bit severe- very "bachelor pad." So if you are going to go for a very big, squared entertainment center, you need to do round/biomorphic/sinewy chairs and accessories to provide a balance, e.g., swan chair, womb chair, Eames chair, etc. Some window treatments may offer the same "softening" effect as well.

Can you tell me the name of the black and ivory cb2 rug? I saw this on their website at one time with interest in purchasing. A few weeks later I went to order it and it was off the website, no longer available. I'm hoping to still find it somewhere. Thanks! :)
