Good Questions: Chair Repair in Chicago?

nicole111808.JPGNicole sent in a good question: I recently bought a svegards table and 4 chairs. i got a good deal, but unfortunately two of the chairs need repair--they each have one stripped screw holding the seat to the base and were glued back together (photo below)...

Can anyone recommend someone to repair danish modern furniture in Chicago? I live on the Northside. I would hate to see these chairs ruined...

I have the same issue with the legs of a danish modern day bed I got on the cheap recently: the legs screw into the bed/base but either the screws are stripped, or the wood inside the former hole is all worn away. Some folks have told me just to fill in the holes with wood putty to make the screws stay in, but I am skeptical.

So if anyone knows anyone in the Albany area, or a quick at-home fix, much appreciated!

Good luck with the chairs!

I don't have any advice for refinishing the chair, but for removing stripped screws, get a screw extractor bit. It spins the opposite direction of a regular drill bit and drills into the head of the stripped screw and unscrews it. Sears has a single bit for less than $2 and also has a set of different sizes.

thanks for all the kind words for oscar...he's a great cat! however, he would be much happier with a less wobbly chair...

I've never done this, but I have read that to fix a stripped screw hole, break round toothpicks in half and glue a few pieces (depending on how loose) into the hole with wood glue, presumabley as tight to the edges as possible. When dry, clip or saw off the projecting bits and screw the screw into the hole, which now has something for it to bite into.

Don't know what to do about that messy patch job, though.
