Good Questions: Great Lakes Bed and Breakfasts?

091807mackinacbay.JPGDear AT,

I am always...several times a year..trying to investigate and discover bed and breakfasts in Wisconsin, Michigan, etc. (weekend trips from Chicago) that are inspired and cool. not dripping with cobwebbed old china dolls! While sometimes that's part of the fun, we also just want something really US. My boyfriend and I are plotting a trip right now and I just want to stumble upon something well done. Any tips?

Thanks!
Brooke

This is a great B&B if you want totally get away. It's just south of Door County and the crowds and it has great small town charm.

We went a couple of years ago and had a great time. That year, in the early spring they were running a great special that if you stayed 2 nights you got gift certificates to cute restaurants and shops locally. They have a local winery, great little bookstore and a couple of nice little restaurants. They are a mile or so south of town, so we actually walked along the shore to town one day. We went with another couple and had a great time.

It is run by a lovely British couple -- they were fantastic. The rooms look a little fuddy duddy in the pictures, but were very nice in person. We stayed in the Driftwood.

I know you said Wisconsin or Michigan but about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Chicago is Mont Rest B&B in Iowa. They have an awesome river boat cruise and a wine pairing dinner. They also have Murder Mysteries which me and a bunch from my church did a few years back. It was a great time. Their website is http://montrest.com/ Have fun!

We really enjoyed the hosts and breakfast at The Bailey House in Williams Bay, near Lake Geneva in WI.

We've also stayed twice at Moore's Creek Inn in Saugatuck, MI. The hosts are so welcoming and it's a really short walk into the charming downtown.

And while not a B&B, we also enjoyed a getaway from Chicago to the Harbor Grand Hotel in New Buffalo, MI. The architecture is lovely and we had a fireplace in our room.

My fiance and I stayed at The Mansion Hill Inn in Madision awhile ago, and loved it. The decor is very understated for a bed and breakfast, and the bathrooms are superb. The owner told me that a lot of their wallpaper comes from The Mart. Try the Lilly Langtree or the Sarah Fairchild with the secret door to the bathroom.

Also, the Rippon Kinsela House in Springfield is nice, with the Captain's Quarters being the nicest. The decor is light on the chintz, so it is more relaxing than most B&Bs.

I often stay at Albany House in Albany, Wisconsin. It's a very small town, but it's conveniently located near several larger towns that are the true dairyland. (It's about 45 minutes south of Madison.)

The owner has rescued a beautiful Arts and Crafts "farmhouse" from the typical "country" decorating. It's not strictly decorated in the Arts and Crafts style, but rather a mix of elegant but not intimidating furnishings. Every room has a pair of elaborate shoes hidden somewhere.

The food is wonderful (lots of local artisan cheeses) and plentiful. It's a very relaxed atmosphere.

I wish I could suggest a bed and breakfast and am very curious at what people suggest in Wisconsin. Anyone have any recommendations for around Chicago?
