Dear AT...I have recently signed the lease on a glorified walk-in closet. It's a 275 sq-ft studio. THERE IS NO SLEEPING LOFT, but the ceilings are about 20' high, as are the windows, which make the space incredibly bright. Beyond not knowing to do with the funky layout is this: I need to know where to get a good sleeper sofa. Yes, Ikea and Jennifer Convertibles sell the, but have you SEEN them? Yuck! Montauk has some chic ones, but at 86" Long, I think it would dwarf my space. Does anyone know where I can get a great sleeper sofa? - Tabitha
Congrats on the new place. The 20' foot ceilings and windows sound amazing. Hope you'll send in photos once you are settled!
Two suggestions to kick things off:
Queen Size: Pietro Arosio's Sliding Sofa. It comes in four colors, red, beige, green and gray. Pluses: the look is compact but the bed size is generous, it's got quality (Italian) construction and the upholstery is completely removable for cleaning.
Full Size: We like the Preston 63" Armless sleeper sofa from Room and Board. Pluses: It's a super simple, Ultra compact piece that will fit in most anywhere, size and style-wise. The teeter fabric that it comes in is really nice and textural and the colors are great (especially the pumpkin).
Ok, we're opening this one up...please give Tabitha your ideas, feedback and suggestions for great sleeper sofas...
Why not build a sleeping loft? Ask the landlord...
It does not have to be permanent- it can be a floating structure and still secure...
A good carpenter could build you one and methinks it wouldn't bee too costly...if you're handy (or have handy friends) it is really easy to build a loft- there are plenty of resources online- ask Mr. Google...

I second this idea! With such high ceilings, you'd be really maximizing the space. Just make sure whoever does it builds some lovely steps to make it easy to get to!

Please please post some photo's of this space. Maybe a floor plan?
But the sleeper loft sounds like the way to go for saving floor space. If you cannot go that route, I would suggest just checking out ikea, as they do have some good sleeper sofa's.

with their sofa beds, you can also pick the mattress.
Good luck!

http://www.apt-ny.com/ has a lot of great looking small scale sleeper sofas that are really reasonable in price. I can't completely vouch for them because I have never sat on one or seen any in person, but depending on their return policy it might be worth a look.
If you want to go high end, Cappellini's Cuba line has sleepers in 3 different sizes and is really nice. It's pricey, but if you order it through europebynet.com you can probably save 30-40%.
Building a loft would be great. my husband lived in a garage for a little while (before we got married) and he built this fantastic loft with a bed up top, desk and storage on the bottom. The whole thing was on gigantic casters and was so cool it it's probably what convinced me to date him. I think I have some images somewhere. I'll check.
The perk of buying a sofa you love as opposed to investing in building a loft is that you will take it with you if/when you move.

I agree that the sleeping loft would be the best solution; however, if this is not possible, and you are looking for a quality sleeper, check out American Upholstery. I own one, and I (and my guests) love it.

We bought this one on Craigslist (in the exact same color as the link), but even new they are very reasonably priced and I think it's lovely.
Sorry for the long link:

We have a sleeper sofa, the "Puzzle" model by Innovation-USA. I believe it's available at apt-ny.com, but I'm not sure since it was a gift from my parents. We have it in red and like it a lot. It converts from flat (bed mode) to loungy (the back at about 45 degrees) to super-sofa (back at about 90 degrees).
Our daughter slept on it for 2 years and now it's in our living room (she decided she wanted a loft bed). When we first got it, it was so firm that she needed a pad to make it squishy enough for her. (I was a little jealous because our mattress sucked.)
Even after 2 years of being strictly a bed, it's still firm and comfy. It now sits in our living room and gets compliments from guests. My husband and I like lie it flat and nap on it. Since it's become our sofa, we've had a few guests sleep on it, and they all like it (or are at least polite enough to not mention how poorly they slept and what horrible hosts we are). We may replace it eventually, but not any time soon.
My only issue with it is the size. When it folds out into a bed, it's bigger than a twin, but now quite a full. So twin fitted sheets don't quite fit, but full fitted sheets are a little too big. Also it's heavy, so moving it is no fun.
All in all, a decent cheap sleeper sofa that looks clean and modern.

I agree with the others, build a loft. I know that might be hard in the city [lord knows I'm battling that problem] but if you go to Home Depot with plans, they can cut the wood for you, all you have to do is take it home and put it together.
