Good Questions: How to Find Value of Craigslist Items?

chairs032409.JPGBrisa has a good question: I just purchased some nice cane back chairs that I spotted on Craigslist. They were from an old company that just closed its doors in all the chairs were only $25 each so I took them all ones on coasters. They are Labeled Hickory Chair I looked up the chairs to try to get some more info on them but didn't find much. The found similar ones on their website but of course it doesn't give you a price....

Anyone have a clue how old they are? I cant find anything on them other than the tag and company they were going too. I was going to paint and reupholster them but am not sure, should I leave them alone and just restore them? Are they worth preserving their originality? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Please share any info or advice on where to find it with Brisa in the comments below...

This style was very common in the 70s and 80s, and there are still a lot of them around. (In fact, seems like they have been showing up right here a lot lately.) Check eBay completed auctions for similar items. It can give you a ballpark idea of what they might be worth. Or find a dealer who sells the brand and get more info through them. I have a feeling you paid a fair price.

Those chairs are very nice, and Hickory Chair is a high-end, pricey brand. I fell in love with their "Vauxhall Cabinet" http://www.hickorychair.com/product_detail.aspx?i=4674 recently and wanted two of them to flank my fireplace until I tracked them down at a dealer and priced them. $10,000 each! Kudos to you for a good find.

These are nice chairs, they aren't priceless heirlooms. Refinish them and don't worry their worth. They are worth more than 25 bucks and they are going to look fantastic in your home.

Go for it!
Yes, Hickory Chair is a very high quality manufacturer who makes some exquisite furniture (that I can't afford). But these don''t seem to be of a style that is likely to become iconic. The right paint and fabric would look terrific.
Great find!

I completely agree with kristian and hans111. You got a bargain on some beautiful and well-made (but not iconic) chairs, and now you should do whatever it takes to make them yours.

These chairs look like a solid chair for a busy household with children. The good bit with these chairs is that the cain is only on the back, bcs I have seen them with cain on the seat and they get ruinned easily. I have friends of mine that inherited these similar chairs (in Europe) from their parents and they bought a very solid large dinning table that sits in the center of their large kitchen living room. It is like center control of their house, kids play, do homework, they eat, everything happens there, and these chairs are perfect for that. So enjoy for years to come.

Wow, i am not help with these...but I have a question. I've been looking for a chair like the one pictured here with the casters, but can't for the life of me find them. Do they have a particular name? Does anyone know a good source for them?

Thanks!

Definitely a GREAT bargain! Hickory also makes an office/professional line of furniture, which those may very well be. I bought two leather chairs from an office liquidator. That line usually runs between $250 and $600 per chair, dependent on the style.
