apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Could you help me figure out how to fix these cool chairs that I got at a thrift store? I love them and would be so happy to have them in my future house/apartment, but they need work and I don't know for sure about how to get the paint off. Should I just take it to someone and have them redone?

I can do the work myself if my old Bernina is up to the challenge, and the wood part won't be a problem. But it's the painted plastic/whatever that has me stumped...
