Good Questions: How to install a tin ceiling?

2006-08-11-ceiling.jpg In the thread on Dana Joy's house tour, commenter Kerry said, "I loved everything, including the wonderful ceilings..Do you have any suggestions on where to look for how to do this? I live in a vintage apartment with some nice period details, but there is a drop ceiling in the bedroom! I'd love to do away with it. Thanks!"

We found two online walk-throughs (with pictures - hooray) at HGTV.com, here and here, and one at DIYnetwork.com. It seems like a very do-able project.

Most sites that sell the panels also offer installation instructions so there is lots of info on how-to out there. M-boss sells the panels, as does The American Tin Ceiling Co. and Brian Greers.

Has anyone installed tin ceilings in their home, either as a diy project or with professional installation? We'd love your input....

Dear Janel,

We use American Tin Ceilings for all of our projects. We renovate and decorate many places. I have found that their staff is very courteous and knowledgable. They have helped with over 25 projects and hit it right on the money each time. Also has the fastest turnaround time. I was quoted 20 business days (a month!) from a competitor. I highly recommend them. Ask for Ken Kindfors.

I have also had a good experience with the American Tin Ceiling Company (http://www.americantinceilings.com) They have a "snap & lock" (or something like that) version that doesn't require many nails, and ensures a square fit. They also have "how to" tutorials on their website so you can see if the project is within your comfort zone.
