Dear AT,
I just inherited a full sized bed wooden headboard which has beautiful detail. Unfortunately, I have a queen sized bed. Is there any way I can somehow adjust the headboard to make it fit? I would really hate to get rid of it, but I don't have the room for it in storage.
Any ideas?
-Erin

Dear Erin,
While we know of headboards that can be used for both full and queen sized beds (like the "Accommodating headboard" from South Shore shown above for $219), it's going to take some AT-reader ingenuity to come up with ideas for adapting your inherited headboard. Has anyone out there dealt with something similar and had a success story??
Hanging a curtain on the wall behind the headboard-that would be the right width for a queen bed-could help bridge the gap.

It's hard to say without seeing the piece, but could you use it as wall decor outside the bedroom? Perhaps as a fireplace mantel, or a frame for a flat-screen TV?

I appreciate the comments so far! Anne, I don't really have a great picture of the headboard... blame the hot attic but this is what I could come up with. http://www.flickr.com/photos/9920755@N02/770399767/

You can buy adapter rails (I don't know if that's what they are really called) that will fit into the headboard for a full size and have a little T piece that sticks out to the sides and holds a queen size box spring. Anywhere that sells mattresses should carry them if you ask.
I have a full size head/foot board with a queen size box/mattress. Most people would never notice that the head/foot board were made for a different size mattress. I will try and get a picture of mine tonight as this explanation may not make sense!

Maybe you could hang two long rectangular pieces of art along either side? I also saw a great idea that may or may not match your bedroom, from the Salvage Sisters - they found two awesome greek columns from an architectural salvage store and stood them on either side of their bed. It looked really clean and regal, though it may not be appropriate for your headboard. Just an idea -
