Good Questions: How to Solve Skimra IKEA Lamp Issue?
Chicago

090308ikeashade.jpg
Brandy sent us an email: I'm perplexed by my IKEA lampshades. Are they designed only to fit IKEA bases? I've recently purchased a few Skimra shades but even with the little fitting thingy, they still lean over. The diameter of the hole in the fitting is too large for my lamp bases (which I don't believe to be unusual). Has anyone encountered this, and if so, is there a great DIY to make them work?

Anyone have tips for Brandy??

hmmmm i don't know, brandy... i can tell you i've bought two, for two different, non-ikea bases... they didn't go on perfectly right away, but with a little bit of squeezing they fit just fine...

IKEA shades unfortunately are usually only designed for IKEA bases though they sometimes fit others.

You said you are using the extra piece that snaps onto the hole in the wire to make it smaller correct? Perhaps you have it assempled wrong. First, unscrew the top piece from the base, then slip on the shade, then screw the piece back down onver the shade. That should hold the shade straight. If that isn't the problem, maybe look at the lamps the next time you go to IKEA and/or ask someone in the lighting department. You might just have a defective shade. Hope that helps.

i find a similar problem with Urban Outfitters shades. they are euro style (no harp) and they are also euro sized which is too big for standard US bases. target sells euro style that are US sized.

My sister and I had the same problem with the shades we bought for my nieces room. The shade would lean with or without the extra piece. We were going to try putting some sort of adhesive that wouldn't melt from the heat of the bulb to hold it in place.

I've wrapped the ring in wire before to bulk it up and that seemed to help.

I had that problem too and rigged it with binder clips. I know, I know, tacky, but I couldn't find my pliers and was desperate. No one's noticed though and it stays put...
