Good Questions: How's this Rug?

2007-11-30-tangerine.jpg HelloAT sent in a question: Hello! I was wondering if any ATers have any experience with Room and Board's "Spectrum" rugs, in particular:

  • Is the rug a "shedder?"
  • On a scale of 1-10 (where 1 is ungodly prickly and 10 is downy heaven), how soft do they feel under bare feet? Would you put one in a bedroom?

  • I am impressed with the price for a 100% wool rug, and like the colors, but am too far from a R&B store to feel for myself, and would love to benefit from ATers' invaluable insight!

Lovely color! But unfortunately we don't have experience with the Spectrum rugs, so we are turning this one over right away to the AT design collective...can anyone help out with some info on this rug or recommendations for a similar one?

I don't have the Spectrum rug but I did buy the "Beads" rug about 2 years ago. Its held up really well and doesn't shed at all. On a scale of 1-10 for softness, I would say their wool rugs are between a 5-7...I looked at several in the store before I purchased mine. I would recommend the rug pad if you have hardwood floors. Hope that helps. I would say the quality is quite good for the price.

it's good to ask with R&B rugs, because i've found that some feel very thin and flat while others are more plush. this was not evident from the website but very much so in the store. call and ask one of their 'design associates' to describe it to you.
we got a C&B palmer rug for the bedroom which is 100% wool, solid with ribbing, and it is soft, substantial, and hasn't shed at all.

I have the light aqua-colored Spectrum rug, and it does shed -- we get lima-bean-sized balls of wool accumulating on top of it if we don't vacuum it once a week. However, we have had ours since August and the shedding is starting to taper off.

It might be good to note that we have a dog that really enjoys racing around the carpet like he's doing time trials, so that might encourage more shedding than usual.

I'd give it a 7 on comfort. It's very pleasant underfoot, soft and a little springy, but it's not decadently comfy. I don't dream about walking all over it in bare feet or anything like that.

For $800 you could get a really nice, high-quality rug on CL. Just a thought...

My cousin bought one of these and it's lovely, really soft (I'd give it an 8) and I don't think it sheds. For a lower price point, we bought the PB Henley rug http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p1649/index.cfm?pkey=cprwrugwoo which I'd give a 7 on softness. It sheds a bit, but not too much. We've had it for about 6 weeks now, and it's shedding a lot less than when we first got it.
