Good Questions: Ideas to "Customize" TV Cabinet?

tv110408.jpgElvedon sent us a good question: I just got the TV lift cabinet shown here (above) in black, which is great at hiding my TV but not especially pretty. I chose the very plain model specifically because I thought it would be the most "customizable," but I have never figured out what to do to with it and it's just a big black blob on the wall.

I know I should add hardware, but I still think it's going to look like a big black blob with handles. Do any of you creative people have any good ideas? Please help!

My first thought would be to add textural detail with molding or flat strips of wood, ideally in a pattern that fits your decor. You could paint the added wood black, too, or choose a contrasting color. I like Asian styling, so for me I might do something in a simple repeat design similar to Chinese fretwork. You could do simple horizontal stripes. You could do a square within a square. Infinite possibilities.

Or stretch a cool fabric on artist canvas stretchers and mount to the front.

Or get embossed "tin" at a Home Depot type store.

Or glue on a couple square feet of glass mosaic tiles.

Whatever you do, I'd consider the other furniture around it and the possibility that you might change your mind. (If that's likely, I'd see if velcro could attach any decorations...)

Can you paint it? If it was mine I think I would like to keep it in the same colour as the wall behind and use the empty wall space behind (empty when the TV is down) as a gallery wall. I wouldn't add hardware.
Aternatively, if you want the cabinet to be more visible in the room, you could add all sorts of detail with a wallpaper you like or some of SherryBinNH's ideas.
