Cristopher has been on a search: "I have been trying for years to find a reliable source of inexpensive, modern planters and cachepots. I know Vessel reissued Architectural Pottery designs, but those aren't exactly inexpensive, and they aren't sized appropriately to be cachepots for today's planter sizes. Any suggestions as to where one could find pottery with clean, simple lines?"
"I thought you might have an answer, or, if you don't, that this would make a good open question to AT readers.
Many thanks, as always, and keep up the good work, Cristopher"
Thanks Cristopher. The spot that came to mind for modern, simple planters that are priced well is Sprout Home. All the pieces pictured above are from Sprout and the price range shown is from $10 to under $60. Click here for the full online selection.
The planters are available on the website, but we always like a visit to the Sprout Home shop. (745 N. Damen Ave., Chicago and recently opened in Brooklyn at 44 Grand Street)

they may not be as sleek and modern as you like, but I've found that thrift stores almost *always* have an ample supply of unwanted planters. (I've also rescued several from alleys.) A few coats of rustoleum makes for a really beautiful and supercheap option.

Earlier this Summer, I found a number of really beautiful planters / pots at Grand Street Gardens (west Ukranian Village.) They have a huge selection, and a nice little "sale" section if you don't mind a little chip here and there. I generally purchase one or two really nice pots a year, and paint a bunch of regular terracotta pots pretty soothing colors white / light blue / mint green.

I need major help in finding planters, also...all the ones that catch my eye tend to run about $500 . I can justify that amount for a chair or even lighting, but it seems too extreme for a planter.

A good mail order resource, and in person resource if you're in NYC, is www.jamaligarden.com

I don't think there is a reliable source of inexpensive planters outside of Ikea. I've been looking for years, and nothing is consistent. My best scores are hidden finds -- usually during sales -- at garden centers. For example, I just got six cream-colored German pots at Steins in Kenosha. It's a very simple, graceful shape, and it came in three sizes. The small 4-inch pots were marked down to $2.50.
I just came across this new idea, fabric pots. Their first offering is limited, but the fabric is Angela Adams.

As to a source for modern planters, I have found that a store in Salt Lake City, called Modern Materials Design, has just the thing. They recently closed their retail location to take it to the web and focus on inexpensive and affordable options for modern home accessories. I would watch fior their site to open at www.modernmaterialsdesign.com
