Good Questions: Info on Concrete Wall Panels?

122106concrete.jpg

Hello AT,

Looking for a slick clean wall covering and saw this on ContemporaryFurniture.com. Can't tell if these panels on the wall are a faux product or the real thing. Concrete that is. Anyone know what these panels are made of or where I could get some more info?

Thanks,

Mark

looks like slate to me. Porcelanosa makes large (17 by 27) tiles that look like aging steel. Similar look. I just did a bathroom in them and it is stunning. Looks kind of like that. THey run 9 bucks a foot and can be bought at Expo. Also comes in rusting steel and aluminum. THe black steel is called Ferroker.

Care to put up a picture of that bathroom, greeps? I'd be interested to it.

where i live, the material is called viva board. the board comes standard 8'x4' and the thickness of plywood, has look and feel of raw concrete. you can cut it, bend it just like a sheet of plywood. cheap, around the equiv of $10 per board.

I saw a huge hunk of "concrete" hung the way you'd hang a painting, at a restaurant. Bartender said it was just a big slab of Styrofoam coated with a thin skim of 'crete, and although it was a good 15' long and 6' high, didn't really weigh that much. Just hung there like a painting. Very cool. I'm sure you could do something similar with smaller panels.

It doesn't look like concrete to me, but if it is, there is a concrete-coated drywall called Viroc, which runs $70 a sheet (4 by 8). I have it in my bedroom. It is actually made with concrete, gypsum, and rubber. It looks really cool. It installs like drywall but when you cut it it creates a ton of dust.

I would like to thank greeps, Anon, and Sunspot for the cement board info. All three were very helpful. Web sights informative but no mention of who sales their products. Greeps and Anon where were these two products sold? Home building stores? Specialty items?

Thanks again
Mark

Viroc is usually sold direct to builders. If you google Viroc, you'll come up with some companies. www.architecturalprododucts.com is one. You'll have to dig around some. I called around and around and eventually found a company in New Jersey. My builder drove up there (from DC) and picked up 12 sheets.
