apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: Looking for a Designer in Chicago...

chihome110608.jpgAn AT reader sent us an email: I really enjoy reading your site and all the interior design pieces. I have a penthouse loft in Bucktown, and have a $50K budget. I'm looking for a modern/modernist, forward-thinking interior designer...

Lists of such designers in Chicago are hard to come by, and I was wondering-- do you guys have any references or know of resources to find someone who can work with my budget?

A great place to start is Chicago Home & Garden magazine - they pull together edited lists of decorators and designers for publication in the magazine and online.

We'd also like to hear from readers AND designers - let us know any recommendations or ideas in the comments below...thanks!

I love a designer who was featured in AT a few weeks ago, George Lowell Arduser. Don't know what he charges, but you can look him up by doing an AT search, I guess....

A project of my architecture and design firm, box design, was featured in Chicago Magazine:

http://www.chicagohomemag.com/Chicago-Home/March-April-2007/The-Great-Outdoors/

That project entailed a full building rehab, conversion from office to residential space and interior design services ranging from furniture design to art selection. We work with any budget and relish tight budgets because the design solutions offered come from the unique perspective of economy.

We are currently working on a small, but extensive condo rehab for a couple in Bucktown on a strict $15,000 budget and would be available for an initial consultation. If our firm does not fit your needs, then we would be able to refer you to other designers, both emerging and established. Please feel free to contact me at kdarnstadt@boxarch.com.

Best of luck.
Katherine

I wonder if the teachers at Harrington College of Design could recommend anyone?

You so have to call Jorge Romero of Jorge Romero Design. He just finished his swanky condo on Lake Shore Drive and helped us do our to-the-studs rehab of our single family house in Chicago. His number is 773-505-3544. He has a great eye and knows how to best allocate your funds.

Call Scott Heuvelhorst - he just designed Maria Pinto's showroom in the West Loop. He has a great eye and besides that...a super nice guy.

Why don't you sell your loft and move back to Lincoln Park. We don't want you in our neighborhood.

Seriously, though, not entirely sure why you need to limit your search geographically... find a designer you like and start there.

If you look at mmart.com, you can do a search for what you are looking for - residential, budget, style (I think it breaks it down to these search criterias, but not sure). The site will then give you a list of designers in Chicago that meet your requirements.
