Good Questions: Modern Four Poster Beds Online?

fourposter021809.jpgCheryl sent us a good question: Hi there. I was wondering if you knew of any stores online that carry a four poster bed like the one you featured on your story online? I really like the simple look and so many of the beds are so extravagant that they are almost ugly.

I bought the Ikea Hemnes bed. I hated it in the yellow, but it was marvelously cheap (and easy to assemble and disassemble for future moves). I'm in the middle of painting it a really pretty gray with silver wax finish.

Can either of you tell me how the bed has held up? Did you have to reinforce it in any way? How can I put this...I guess what I am wondering is if the bed would support me and my boyfriend (pleasantly plump (?), larger than average...um, not skinny) during vigorous evening activities...

This looks great! These rooms really seem to resemble designs in these new hotel concepts: http://www.chdmag.com/article/ten-to-watch-the-coolest-hotel-designs-in-california

Great work!

Hee hee brooklynsmall... I've found that the Hemnes is pretty sturdy. It has a metal bracing system, and you have to buy the slats (sold separately- and be sure you ask for them, because the Ikea stock people are doofuses). I'm no pixie, and my boyfriend is 6'8" 200 . We haven't had any trouble with it, and we've "tested" it.

brooklynsmall, my fiance and i just got the hemnes too (our ikea had it on sale for $200 because it's being discontinued) and we were both pretty surprised at how sturdy it is. We've only had it for about a month but so far so good!

Ikea insders say the Hemnes 4 poster may be coming in white this April! And please don't knock Ikea sales people. They're outnumbered 300:1 on the average day. The tags attached to every bed say you need slats. If you can't read them (or ask for help), maybe it's not them that are the doofus...

Ouch, Lizliterarius...

To clarify- when I bought my Hemnes, there were no tags on the box, and no information on the bed in the showroom. When the salespeople looked up the bed in their instruction book, they assured me that I wouldn't need slats. I got ALL the way home and had the bed out of the box before it became clear that the slats were needed (just as I had thought).

I love Ikea in general, but this wasn't a particularly endearing experience.

My warning is this- the Ikea employees are, just as you say, vastly outnumbered and likely to hurry through your questions. But heck, who goes to Ikea for the service? We go there for a cheap product. But if you want to get your money's worth without splurging on gas for a return trip- make sure you do your research ahead of time.

Try Bee-Market.com in SF. They have a bed called the b402 that comes in a variety of woods and finishes and looks almost exactly like the bed in the picture. You have to call them up to order, but the prices are all listed on the website.
