Good Questions: Modern Shops in Nashville?

111606nashville.jpgDear AT,

I recently moved from California to Nashville, TN. We were finally able to purchase a home after long years of living on a military installation and renting. We finally have a place to call our own and make it our own except I am stuck.

Living in California it was easy to find great shops to find unique stuff, especially in Old Sacramento and San Fran. Modern decor wasn't hard to find. But now we live in Nashville and have no clue were to even start. I want to find a neat little shop that sells unique and rare pieces of anything! Modern stores??? I have no clue, there is no Crate & Barrel here, no Chiasso, and the closest Ikea is in Atlanta. Do you have ANY clue where to shop, my house is bare and Pier 1 is getting old...... Please help!

Thank you!

Bree

Dear Bree,

Clearly AT:Chicago is no expert on Nashville, but we know that many of our readers live south of us. Modern Nashville stores, anyone??

Ooh...that's a tough one. I lived there about three years ago so I can't think of much and I wouldn't know of anything new. You might have luck in the Green Hills area or in Cool Springs. I just did some google work and these places were all listed and they are in the right kind of areas for such things:

Highbrow Furniture, 2110 Eighth Ave. S., 620-2007

Mad Mod, 2013 Belmont Blvd., 297-5050

Nouveau Classics, 3201 Belmont Blvd., 383-3164

Pre to Post Modern, 2110 Eighth Ave. S., 292-1958

2 Danes, 73 White Bridge Rd., 352-6085

Urban Décor, 901 Main St., East Nashville, 226-0173

Good luck!

Mad Mod is your place. See?

I'm a transplant to the South myself, and I would encourage you to try to track down some indigenous one-of-kind pieces that will live in harmony with your mod stuff. A piece of folk art, a bottle tree!, a vintage quilt...that will give your home a sense of place, a statement that this house is in Nashville, Tennessee, by God.

Nashville is an awesome city--embrace it and love it for what it is! and if in the end, the shopping continues to dishearten you, well, that's why God invented mail order...

Bree, I live in Nashville, and I am an internet shopping addict to the hilt. The best place to buy from for modern design is www.highbrowfurniture.com. Don't go to the store as most everything is shipped from the warehouse, but when you buy online, you don't pay shipping OR tax, so it's fantastic. Should you need anything, the staff at the store is very helpful. 2 Danes is outrageously overpriced. It's ridiculous. Nouveau Classics on Belmont is fun; it's home store is in Knoxville, so it's local-ish and has a good selection.

Ikea online is the absolute best resource for us in the super shopping deprived land of nash. It's very sad. Atlanta is a fun weekend trip; I do make a few for sure, but internet shopping is the way to go. If you want original pieces, go to the Artful Dog or American Artisian or a couple of the local galleries in East Nash (Lockeland Springs area/Five Points). You have definitely come to a great town...for living at least. There are much better towns for shopping, but no much beats having all the seasons, friendly people and a comfortable way of life (hey, at least we got a Sephora this year!).

I saw a magazine spread recently for a store called "At Home Nashville". Based on the pictures it had more of a transitional or modern-meets-tradtional aesthetic and looked pretty high end. VERY different from Highbrow, but it might be worth a visit.
