Good Questions: Moving Company Suggestions

2007-07-13-movers-lanejohnson.jpg

Mike and Kalinda are moving and sent us an SOS -"Hello there. We live in Rogers Park, and are going to be moving at the end of this month. We have never used a moving company before, but this year we're probably going to need to. (We got married this year, so we have a lot more "stuff.") In particular, we have a new table with a granite top that there is no way the two of us could lift..."

"Does anybody have suggestions for moving companies to use or moving companies to avoid? Or just tips on how to find a good moving company? If it matters, our move is going to be very short, only 7 blocks or so.

Thanks very much,
Mike & Kalinda
"

We haven't done any in-town moves in Chicago, so we can't make a specific recommendation but we are hoping AT:Chicago readers will come through. In fact, we have been planning to feature as many good moving companies as we can find on the site this August, so you would be helping us out too - we are trying to build up a list of the best of the best and if you include it here, we can check them out.

Any good info and advice for Mike and Kalinda (and AT:Chicago)?

Midway Movers was great. Its not cheap but they didn't break or damage anything. We moved about 3 blocks in Bucktown but had to move out one day and move in the next. They kept our stuff on the truck at their storage facility overnight.

I'd recommend them

I'd also recommend USA Moving & Storage. A coworker recommended them after using them twice. And he found out about them through another friend's referral.

We used them to move from a 2-bed, 2nd floor apartment to our 3rd floor condo about a block away.

They arrived on time and got working ASAP. Rates were reasonable (about par w/ competitors). I could've gone with a cheaper company, but USA has an impeccable reputation on Angie's List as well as the BBB, so I went with them. They were careful about wrapping everything up. It took 4 guys about 3.5-4 hours to move our stuff.

A friend moved my stuff: turnkey movers, 847-630-7955. He doesn't charge a lot per hour, but it's only 2 guys, so they take a little longer than most.

I had a good experience with the Professionals, and I recommended them to some friends, and they had a good experience as well. My husband and I had a pretty small move, only a few miles away. Their rates were the best, and they had everything done within two hours and were careful abiding by the move-in rules at our new high-rise condo.

I go their info from the Chicago BBB. They've only had a handful of complaints --really minior compared with some of the bigger companies out there.

I'm getting ready for a short-distance (five blocks) move as well, so I've been doing this research. I think we're going to go with The Professionals -- their reputation on Yelp is pretty impressive, and their rates seem reasonable.

Joey's Movers, out of Skokie. Cheap, fast, and reliable.

Just a tip: With any company, schedule your move for the 1st time slot of the day. If you go with an afternoon time, you risk delays as the company's morning-move may run overtime...

NOT Moishe's. They were absolutely terrible. The team yelled at us for not giving them enough loading space in the apartment, when we didn't know what else to do. They made rude comments to and in front of my wife, and kept asking me how much money I made and why was I moving from a nice place to the place we moved to. And to top it all off, one of them used the bathroom on the way out of the apartment, stopped up the toilet, flooded the bathroom floor, didn't tell us about it, and left it there to stink up the entire apartment. We found it the next day when we went back to clean up. Not to mention, their customer service ignored us when we called to talk to them about the experience.

We were scammed by a moving company once, so for a recent move from Boston to Chicago, I did my due diligence this time around. We used Prager (based in Naperville) for the Chicago end of the move and they were great.

If you google moving scam you will find a great website with a lot of tips. There is also a link with recommendations for moving companies in each state and in larger cities. You have to dig around for it. I'm not sure if I can post links here...?

The site was a wealth of information and helped us have a great experience. Good luck!

Reebie's were great, and very professional - we had a very weird move, given than three people were moving out, but into two different places, and the price seemed ok (having grown up in the military, I'm not used to paying for movers, so I don't know how much is normal). Anyway, I am always impressed when guys can load 3 boxes of books on their backs.

I wholeheartedly second the recommendation for Reebie. I have used them twice and each time they were fast, reliable, polite, dependable, professional, etc.

Jackie, the mover coordinator, walks you through (over the phone) room by room to determine how much "stuff" you have. Then she will determine the size of the crew, how long it will take, etc. to determine the most cost effective scenario. In my case, it was slightly more expensive, but would take a shorter period of time to load and unload with a larger crew (4 guys) as opposed to a smaller crew (3 guys) that would take about 1-1 1/2 hours longer.

And, on top of that, Jackie reassured me, calling me back from home, the night before my move when I was beginning to have a meltdown about finishing my packing!

They were great.

Joey's is good. I moved two blocks last fall and they did a good
job with my things.

Scheduling the first move of the day also means your own move will take less time, be less expensive- because the guys are fresh.

I can't believe they can do more than one a day! When I used to move my own stuff, with the help of friends, it took a couple days for our muscles to recover (for one move).

I love USA Moving & Storage. I've used them twice - both times they were punctual, helpful, overly careful with my fragile stuff, and ended up right on budget with the estimate they had provided. I HIGHLY recommend them to anyone.
