Dear AT,
Why are garbage cans $200? We've been looking for months, and would love to find a self-closing, tall, good looking garbage can that doesn't cost $200. Even better, one that has a recycling compartment... what you got AT?

Dear Jimbo,
Initially, this felt like a job for Overstock.com, but when we got there, the most interesting thing we found was an infrared bin that opens without touching it (operating on batteries, which all seems a little over the top!). So we kept looking in hopes to find the ever-important recycling and trash bin combined, and we spotted this stainless steel one at Target ($99.99, pictured above).
One thing that seems like an absolute: If you want it to look good and accomodate recycling, it's going to cost at least $100, but we think you can stay far below the $200 that's been driving you in circles.
Anyone else? Suggestions welcome! We're on the hunt for a good one for our kitchen, too...
We put the touchless trash can on our wedding registry at Target. We have had it for about 4 months with the same batteries. I didn't realize it needed batteries before we got it- and it is a negative I think. We love it though despite that- my previous covered trash can was a plastic rubbermaid roughneck. It kept the scooped cat litter smell at a minimum, but having to touch the lid every time you wanted to throw something away was pain.
Heather-
I have had mine for about 6 months and haven't had to replace the batteries yet. Another plus is that it has a hoop to tuck the garbage bag around rather than an inner can. This not only keeps the bag from sliding down, it also creates a clean look as the white bag doesn't stick out the edges when you put the top on.
Just as a warning though for those with large dogs that like to get in the garbage, you maybe want to switch the infrared off and use the push button open/close option instead.

Cheesy as it may be, I have the infrared bin and love it. I purchased a very similar (if not same)one shown at Costco for less than $40. Another bonus is that the top doesn't slam up against the wall like my incredibly overpriced step garbage can did.
Anne,
Well it must be popular (and we're glad it's good) because it was nearly sold out on Overstock.com.
What about battery replacement? How often do you have to deal with that and is it even a big deal to you? Thanks for the review!
I become more fond of Target every day. I notice the Overstock.com single unit is approximately the same price as the Target double unit. Interesting.
I saw an episode of "Net" on DHOM in which they acquired a triple unit. I can't find it online and I can't even imagine what that one costs.
Save me from myself....sorry, I meant "Neat".
There's a model that has an AC Adater too. There are tons of them on www.trashcansandmore.com/
I have this one from SimpleHuman, and I love it.

My doctor's office just got those self-opening garbage cans for their offices... the thing is sitting next to the patient chairs, so every time someone sits down, or moves their legs, it opens.
jackie (too): i saw that same episode and have been looking ever since for the 3-compartment stainless trash bin...
what's up with that? "neat" is a canadian production...maybe we gotta roadtrip it?
K: Just saw your post. Hey, I'd roadtrip for the 3 compartment thing. thanks. thought I was the only one in love with it.
jackie (too): look what I found!
