Good Questions: Paint Color to Complement Sofa?

2007-08-15-colorsofa.jpg

Erica is looking for color ideas: Hi Everyone~ I am moving into a new flat, and I found this sofa. I am thinking of buying it. I'm just not sure what color to paint my living room to help show off the sofa. Any ideas? I've seen a lime green suggestion for a similar colored couch, I'm really not a fan of lime green unfortunately. Green is one of my favorite colors, just not the lime.

Thanks, Erica. Fun Sofa! We loved working on a colorful question on this dark morning...here are a few suggestions...

All paint colors used are Benjamin Moore:

I go with the fresh cut grass. You can do green, just a lighter tonal value from the sofa, taht way the sofa stands out.

Nicole Miller would not discourage you from using any set of colors that please you! You like greens. Greens and browns with yellow and orange are familiar Fall colors. Pull your palette from nature and you'll probably be happy. Don't forget the red accents from trees that saw a lot of rain during the summer season. Good luck.

I think the green color would be great. The blue and brown looks pretty, too, but my hesitation with that would be that blue and brown is the big, hot, combination this year, which means it's going to look the most dated and "out" in another year or two. The green is beautiful and less apt to become dated looking. Of course, the flip side of blue/brown being so in, is that it is very easy to find any possible item you want in this combination to add to the room.

Have you considered what mood your going for? Energetic, sophisticated, relaxing, punky, soothing....etc.

I vote for the Dior gray. It feels very sophisticated and soothing at the same time. Check out these colorways from dwell :

I would go with dior gray even though the blue is very pretty.

I vote for the green. The color combination of the blue and the couch color is very nice as an abstract color combination, but in a room there would be a large of expanse of light blue wall, and I somehow think that next to all that blue, the couch would look artificially old and shabby.

Green or grey. Although I'm more inclined toward the green.

There is some red in that sofa color, so I would go pretty pale with any green, and probably do a grayish-green. Of Janel's choices, I like Bird's Egg and Dior the best.

Janel, it's complement, not compliment. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

birds egg or dior grey. my apartment has combos of that orangey color, and light blues, chocolate browns, creams and greys. the palette is pretty versatile and you can easily change a color or two as you please.

Gentleman's Gray but I wouldn't paint the entire room that color. Instead, I would do it on a single wall or as a strong accent along with another more neutral one unless you're going for drama.

fresh cut grass

One caution with the fresh cut grass. This color alters dramatically from sunlight to lamp light. On a small paint chip, it looks great. Even a 12"x12" swatch painted on the wall looks ok - light and fun. However, I painted my living room (12x20) with it a couple of years ago and in bright sunlight (direct southern exposure), it turns into neon electric acid lemonade, a shade so blinding I had to repaint. Might be less shocking in a northern facing room.

Something a bit more muted, like pear green? I think that shade is in the Benj Moore palette. I'd also suggest French Grey - on the wall it looks like a pale, soothing grey-green. At least it did in my friends' living room.

I'm a fan of the bird's egg. Gotta love complements. I also like madchaka's idea of one wall in the gentlemen's grey. Perhaps the accent wall in the gentlemen's grey, sofa against it, and the rest bird's egg? They have a similar temperature.

If your floors are a warm wood, you really need a cool color; but a warmer version of cool; if your flooring is carpet or other, warmed up cool tone is still good; I like the blues, but bird's eye is a bit light for my liking; I love BM's paint fans; I use them all the time and their color selection is unprecedented; Try Rhine River 689; or if that is dark, depending on the amount of natural light, size of space, etc., try Beach Glass 1564; both are BM colors.

They have a washable flat that I would recommend. Test if you can; the quart you waste is worth it.

Good luck and post after pics---

Wow! Thank you all for so much advice! I am going to visit the couch tomorrow and will keep you posted on the purchase. Just to answer a few questions about the place... The flat is a bit subtle as far as natural light, there is quite a few old trees just outside the windows so it's probably 2/3 shade throughout the day. As far as my style; I'm a fine arts student if that says anything... my belongings end up being an accumulation of my student work however, I absolutely love mid century design, collecting antiques with really nice clean lines and organic feel, and I have a deep crush on illustrative work such as mark ryden and tim biskup and joe sorren. So, simply put I am a bit eclectic in a very picky sort of way.

just an update for everyone... I bought the sofa and I absolutely love it. It's acutally in better, brighter shape than the original image I posted. Today I am finishing up painting the living room of our new apartment. I'm not going to spill the beans on the color I chose, but I will say that I am very pleased with it. I will post some images of my progress soon. Thank you all again for your advice.
