Good Questions: Painter Recommendations?

092906paint.jpgDear AT,

We just found out today that the offer we put in on a new place got accepted. This is spectacular, the only issue, though, is the builder is painting ALL the walls a linen white.

This will not do, so I was hoping for some help from your readers to either send some painted rooms in or suggest a painter that they have had success with.

Thanks for the help,
Adam

Dear Adam,

Just in time for the Color Contest starting next week! We'll be sharing many reader photos and tips on color. For now, we'll leave readers with your question about painter recommendations...any professional painters we should all know about?

Hi Adam of the Linen White Walls-
My boyfriend, Andrius, is a professional painter. He's been experimenting with treatments in our own house. Click on my name to see our AptTherapy house tour. He painted everything in there.

If you're interested in talking to him about having him work on your place, send me an email via my blog and I'll set it up.

Good luck!

Try Geoff Smalley at www.artistsatwork.net

email info@artistsatwork.net or call 773.315.7680

He is fantastic, did my old apartment and is going to do my kitchen soon. Call soon, he gets booked up. He does murals, as you'll see from the site, but also regular interior painting.

Whoa! Holy Hit-the-Road-Jack, Batman!

Andrius is no longer the boyfriend so please don't contact me to set something up. But DO visit design boner because I'm still snuggly in-love with that blog!

Hahaha, sneaky AT, re-running posts!

Adam: You can't possibly know what colors you will want to see on the walls until you live there for a while and understand the light in each room and what about your furniture? Won't that be a consideration as well? Do get the painters to paint the trim and baseboards a high-quality, gloss white and that part will likely not have to be redone. You can start asking around paint stores to find a "colorist" who can help you make color decisions and tie everything together. Nevertheless, I can certainly understand your eagerness to put your own stamp on the place.

Join Angie's List. I consider it a must for all property owners.

You'll get unbiased reviews of all kinds of service providers, including painters. Members write the reviews (and post pictures of finished work), so you can pre-check references before making any phone calls for estimates. If you get a name for a friend, you can check to see the experience others have had with that contractor before proceeding.

Also, be sure to get everything in writing, check references, ask for proof of insurance, etc. Check the BBB, state licensing boards, etc before hiring. I may sound paranoid, but I speak from experience (and 20K and my sense of security lost to a scary crocked contractor...but Angie's list gave me a venue for posting my honest assessment of his crap work, and the name of a locksmith so he couldn't try to break into my house again....)

Check out Chicago Interiors at 773-317-4868. You can see some of her work when clicking on my name...she didn't assist on the palette here, but offers that service as well.
