Good Questions: Similar Chiffonier for Less?

pb040109.jpgChristine writes: I love everything about this chiffonier from Pottery Barn Teen...3 big drawers, 3 small drawers, and 3 hidden sheves are an exact match for what I need to store. Everything is perfect - except for the price tag. Can anyone find a lookalike for me that fits a student's budget?

Well, not quite the same, but still cute and functional at a fraction of the cost:

How about this:

You'd have to paint it-- but at half the price, you may agree it's worth it.

robinette--i think that cabinet is a really good choice for the price....you could repaint it if the color isn't right, and I think you might be able to replace with louvered panels with thin mdf panels if you are handy. You might even be able to glue in (or just use those little mirrors clips that screw into the wall) mirrors on the inside of the doors.

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90141859 not quite, but you may have to sacrifice those little drawers if you want something affordable.

Craigslist always has similar-function pieces listed that could be painted.

I agree that for its size, the price seems very good. Although the quality might not be there. I like the idea of painting an unfinished piece. I did some web searching but couldn't find anything quite comparable that wasn't already about $800. BUT, if you can find an unfinished furniture store near you, pay them a visit and see what they have. Sometimes you can get lucky with clearance pieces. If you go the unfinished route, get something in maple, alder, aspen, ash (NOT pine), as these woods are pretty hard and take paint BEAUTIFULLY. I painted my son's nursery dresser and changing table. I thought it would be a chore but it was one of the easiest, most successful projects I've ever done.

not quite what you're looking for because it's got glass doors, but if you didn't mind that, it could work for linen, I think.

I second the Craigslist suggestion.

You could also just buy any old second hand dresser and set a stock kitchen cabinet on top of it, and paint the whole thing.
