Good Questions: Snow White Rug That Doesn't Shed?

111307westelmrug.jpgDear AT,
I am on the hunt for a bright white area rug that does not shed. I love the look (and price) of the West Elm cable rug, but we had it for a few days and all the rug bunnies everywhere drove us crazy enough to return it...

Other versions that (according to google searches) shed less from Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn are ivory and look really yellow in our space. Any ideas on a snow white shag rug that doesn't shed or an alternative to get that same look. I need a 5X8 and I am hoping to spend under $500.

Thanks AT readers!

Jenny

OMG--I had that same rug---awful! I got the low-down from a good sales associate at Crate and Barrel soon after:
All wool rugs shed, theirs included. It happens. It is supposed to go away with lots of vacuuming--but that pottery barn one did not! They refused to take it back (we used the dyson too).

I ended up with this one from Target--it cleans up amazingly (we have 3 cats) and does not shed. It is cream though.

I'm new to AT- posting comments that is...but I turned to ebay when ordering shag white rugs...sansom shag rugs .c

You can customize the size and color. I had a 5x5 size in white in an old apt a couple of years back and loved it, and a lot less than $500. I had tiled floors and never noticed any shedding.

i now have the crate & barrel rug and it is the same deal all over again. i most likely will be returning it as well. this will make the third shag rug i have returned this year. i have seen shag rugs of this type at world market, target, and pier 1, but the quality was not all that good in my opion. the cb2 rug looks nice, but i heard it sheds too. i am super frustrated by the whole ordeal of owning a shag rug like this.

The world market shag rug is the worst, I had rug bunnies in rooms that were not even near that rug!

Taracakes, I have the same Target rug in a lighter beige color (similar to the color of that west elm cable rug) and was just going to suggest it as well. I was on the hunt for a cool light beige shag rug for weeks, also with a $500 budget . . . then I found that one at Target for $80!!! Best purchase ever, and it's been very easy to take care of so far.

I bought one of these rugs about a year ago. Its a great alternative to wool and there is literally almost zero shedding. Its really soft and has stood up to a high traffic pattern and a big black labrador. Mine is bright white and very modern. It was made by soho rugs - go on their website and search for Kiwami area rugs. There are online retailers that carry these if you just google Kiwami rugs. I found my 6' x 10' for a little over $300. They are made from the same process as barbie hair... not as strange as it sounds. Come on, who doesn't want their very own barbie patch ;)

I got used to my West Elm shedder...the shedding decreases with time but it's still there. I have a black Eames Surfboard coffeetable resting on it and you can imagine how it looks after a few days of videogame nirvana.

Suffice to say, I keep my Dyson around for quick cleanup if anyone calls in out of the blue for a visit.

Oh...I'm already in the habit of NEVER letting black clothing get near it. I once knelt on the rug with black jeans...

I had the same problem!!!!

Bought the cheap one from Ikea and fell twice and cleaned for days.

I found an alternative at Home Depot of all places. It's not wool. It doesn't have the longest pile but it was only $99. I think it's about 5x8 and for that price it can be replaced if need be without feeling to sad. I used it in two places on my ebony hardwood floors and it's working out very well.
