Good Questions: Store, Keep at the Office, or Sell this Classic Piece?

121206table.jpgDear AT,

Something that I am sure other bargain loving AT readers have grappled with from time to time. You find a classic piece of design for free or for very little money. You appreciate the "classic" nature of the design, but maybe you don't really have a place for it or maybe you really don't LOVE it. I ran into such a conendrum today when I found a beautiful Warren Platner Knoll cocktail table at an office warehouse sale for $100. Now I do like it, but my research shows that I can get upwards of $700 for it on eBay (and I need the money!). Plus, a glass table doesn't work with two toddlers in the house. What to do? Put it in storage? Keep it at the office? Thoughts, AT readers?

Dear David,

Personally, we have decided to stop storing things that we "might use someday." We try to keep the storage limited to heirlooms, luggage, etc. With toddlers in the house, your need for a little extra cash, and the fact that you only "like it" (but we noticed you didn't say LOVE IT), don't hang on to it just because it's classic. Wait to find something that you love and is fully functional in your home, as you live in it now.

Others may disagree...AT readers, your thoughts, please!

Sell it, and use the money for something else that you LOVE.

No question. If you're not in love with it, then why have it?

I'm going to agree. Only keep it if you LOVE it.

Otherwise turn your $100 steal around and sell it for a pretty penny.

Here are my thoughts. If you are somewhat of a modern person, part of living a modern lifestyle is living with less (i.e. less = more theory). Plus, if you are possibly not going to use it, sell it to give the opportunity of using it to someone else.

Personally, I'm all for collecting things that are vintage, but I'm not for collecting things that are vintage and then just have them sit there on a shelf or whatever. They must be used. :)

when i am in doubt about buying something really cool but that i really don't need, i imagine the person coming after me who will just flip over the thing and be soooo glad they found it - that always makes it much easier to just walk away.

in your case, though, buy it for ebay, definitely!
