Good Questions: Stylish and Functional Clock Radios?

072307nightstand.JPGDear AT,

I just bought this great new nightstand and now I need things to put on top of it. I hate my current alarm clock, but I can't find any new ones that I like.

There are lots of attractive vintage alarm clocks, but I need a clock radio--I can't handle waking up to an alarm sound at 6 in the morning, I need my Abby Ryan traffic report easing me awake.

Are there any stylish and functional clock radios out there?

Thanks,
Evelyn

Dear Evelyn,

Back in February, Janel did a top ten post of stylish alarm clocks. Though most of these don't included a radio, there was a link from AT reader Kelly to this one by American Innovative: the Neverlate 7-day alarm clock (with radio, pictured right). Kelly describes it as more functional than pretty, but we think the look isn't all that bad.

We normally use our cell phone alarm, but on our other bedside table sits an older, sleeker version of this Sony Dream Machine, which has stood up well (it looks more like this, but without the hidden video camera (?!).)

072307crosleycomet.jpgAT contributor Jessica also spotted some retro-looking designs:
Big Ben from Target (also discussed by readers/users in the Top Ten thread
Crosley Comet radio from Linens 'N Things (pictured left - we really like this one!).

Anyone else have good suggestions?

The Tivoli Model Three would look gorgeous on your new nightstand. The clock glows a soft silvery color when the lights are out, and the sound is superb. It's available at Target, and they recently offered a $50 gift card with purchase of any Tivoli clock radio. I'm not sure if that offer's still going on, but here's a link:

got a great cd-radio-dual alarm-clock at target a while back (saw it there a few months ago - can't find it online). it is silver, but the side panels are speaker covers and you can pop them off and recover with fabric (I used bark cloth from repro depot to match pillow covers). favorite feature - the buzzing alarm clock sounds starts soft and slowly gets louder. makes all the difference.
