Good Questions: Tricks to Make Couch More Comfy?

121007polder_sofa_buttons.jpgDear AT,

I have recently inherited a couch. The cushions are very firm and make it hard to get comfortable. Unfortunately, the cushions are not detachable. I've tried leaving heavy objects like bowling balls and weights on an attempt to soften the seats. What other ways you would recommend to put comfort in a couch?

Dear Brian,

Even though your cushions aren't detachable, do they have apparent zippers/openings for replacing the stuffing (we're guessing not)? But if so, we'd try getting a good upholsterer to make a house call (or measure up, buy the stuffing, and DIY). We restuffed our vintage cushions recently and it made all the difference in the world.

If that's not an option, we are stumped. Has anyone else had this dilemma? What was the answer (if bowling balls didn't quite do the trick)?

(AT:NY posted a similar question a couple weeks back...)

When I first got the couch I have now, it was VERY firm, but it was a sample and the price was just too good to turn down ($400 for a $2000 couch).

We found that it softened up after about a year of good use (watching TV on it, having a few dinner parties, jumping around on it with shoes off of course)

It will soften over time I think, just needs a little working in.

Big cushy throw cushions? A cuddly throw blanket?
