Dear AT,
I found a particular type of Eames chair I had never come across before on a Japanese web site and was wondering if you could give me any information on this piece.
They are an Eames Side Chair (with padded fabric shell) and an Eames Arm Chair (with padded fabric shell). Basically I am very interested in finding out info about the padded back shell as opposed to the hard shell you typically see in these chairs.
Thanks!!
-Veronica

Dear Veronica,
We're actually sitting in a burnt orange padded Eames shell chair as we type this. Ours has wheels (meant for the office), so not exactly like the ones you found on the Japanese web site. What we know: The padded shells are made from wool, and the chair is incredibly comfortable and durable. We found this one (left), similar to the armchair photo you sent in, going for $425 from an online antiques dealer (scroll down to the bottom of the page to find it). We've certainly seen these chairs when scouring antique shops full of modern design, so we'd first recommend checking out a local spot like BAM (and it never hurts to keep an eye on eBay).
Anyone else??
oh my gosh thank u SO much!!!!!
i actually emailed modernica as I know they carry a lot of eames items , but I never heard back..
I even love the orange color of this..and i actually want to use it in my bedroom as a desk chair so its perfect. i have back problems and cant sit for a long time in non-padded chairs, but still wanted something stylish and this is perfect! im glad to know its comfortable as well.
I will go by BAM this weekend, but if I dont find something there, I will probably pick up the one you linked to when I get paid next!
thanks again!
Veronica,
The Eames started out by making the chairs out of plain fiberglas. A number of the original chairs were deemed unsuitable for sale because the colors werent quite correct. They were set aside and later used as the first of the upholstered chairs. The chairs were upholstered in a number of fabrics - some wool, some cambric, LOTS of vinyl in some crazy colors!
You can find out lots of info on all the Eames chairs in the books "Eames Design" or "Eames: A legacy of Invention" or "An Eames Primer"
