Good Questions: What Can I Do with This Piece?
Chicago

081808bookcase.JPGJanine says: I found this at a yard sale last weekend, and although I wasn't convinced it was anything special, I bought it since it was only $5. I figured I could just get rid of it later if nothing could be done with it. My question: what can I do with it? I realize it's not a quality piece of furniture, but I thought with a coat of paint it might look kinda cool. Am I crazy?

Thanks for any help!! - Janine

Dear Janine,

We think a couple coats of shiny white would turn this into something totally new. You may want to consider removing the glass doors as well, to see if an open case inspires some fresh ideas of how to put this piece to use.

AT readers, let Janine know what you think....

I would paint it, and then cover the shelf and the bottom of the inside with a graphic fabric - very funky

I second the idea of painting it white, but maybe the back panel can be painted a different color for contrast/fun.

i personally would keep the glass doors if they're not damaged b/c it will keep the dust away from whatever you display here.

Glossy white.

If its really not a nice surface, ie., particle board or laminate, why not decoupage the whole thing with some really groovey images.

Wow. My mom has a very similar bookcase.! Hers is a bit narrower though.

I grew up with it in the living room and spent hours pouring over the Childcraft books we kept inside. When I go back to visit I keep wishing I had room for it at my house! I WILL have it some day it's so cool.

However, Mom's seems to be in better condition... does the wood look hazy or something? If the wood is not in great shape, paint it. It's a fun piece.

I think it would look great glossy white. Maybe the inside of the piece could be papered or done in a bright fun color. It would make a nice buffet.

How about glossy black with a fuschia interior? Also, I second keeping the glass to keep the dust out.

It's got nice lines, I say go with it. I bought a coffee table this weekend at the Goodwill - Terrible quality, the same sort of plastic laminate wood-grain stuff, but great lines and good condition. Work it!

I like all the ideas too - I was gonna say high-gloss black with a cool wallpaper on the inside-back.

Looks like a perfect tv and/or stereo stand. Drill a low hole in the back for wires then attache exta wire length across the back so they don't drag the floor. You may decide the glass doors can go, but may want to see how they work for the first little while. You can paint/decorate to subtley mesh with you decore or do something wild and eye catching.

Another idea is a bedside table, for this I would lose the glass. Shelves would be great for bedtime reading, magazine collection, and pretty boxes for night creams and ear plugs. I like to have something next to the bed that a frosty pint of beer won't hurt...maybe cover the top with glass or a "table runner" type table cloth of faux leather.

I would paint it a bright color that complements whatever dinnerware you use and use it as a low china cabinet jsut outside your kitchen- to display and store things like serving dishes, pitchers, and other things that might otherwise clutter your kitchen or be hard to store in a small kitchen- like bar-ware and alcohol maybe.

Oh- and I wouldn't paint it white. It would show dirt or get dingy too quickly.

Love it: liquor cabinet, stereo and CD storage, books, magazines, stationery, games, linens--whatever you might have. Rather than white (which appears nowhere in my domicile), I'd opt for a rich blue.

High-gloss red!

I like the high gloss paint... I like the red or even another bright color like a bright blue or green.

If I were going to use it, I would use it for an entertainment center for my one tiny tv. I agree... drill a hole in the back if you are going to do that. It would also make great storage or what not in a kitchen/dining room. I think you should keep the glass, but frost it or put a decorative wallpaper on it.

This can be a great piece. The color to paint it may depend on what you are planning to display inside. If you are putting in white objects, you may opt for a darker color to make the displayed pieces pop.

It's nice -- painted white, black or a rich color and it will be great. I'd keep the glass and consider decorating it so that it's only semi-transparent. Maybe it's a bad example, but I can picture painting large blades of grass on the inside, but not completely covering the glass so you'd see a little of the books or other contents behind. (If you paint the back of the glass, remember you have to start with the final details first, then add the background, opposite from the way you usually paint a picture). Another example would be to use a bold wallpaper -- cut out the pattern and glue it to the inside of the glass so the background would be transparent glass. Something like that might be fun.

I love things that keep the dust out. Good eye! I vote turquoise with a coral inside and display all white things inside. Have any collections that need to be corralled?

Enough with the duplicate posts already - this was done last week.

I would refinish the wood, frost the glass doors and then buy some wall decals and stick them on. That way it's not permanent, you can change the decals, or later paint the whole piece.

I have one similar to this piece. It has become very useful in a awkward corner that I have. I put a small radio/cd/ipod player and a small lamp on top. I also paired it with a comfortable vintage chair. Now my awkward corner has become a nice place to read and listen to some music.

Seriously. What is going on with the duplicate posts?!? I have seen everything from good questions and look!s to house tours (found on flickr) over again! Dont get me wrong, I love AT, but it seems to me that the AT people need to communicate a little bit more between the chapters.

Please?

or at the very least, scroll through the content of the site they contribute to on a daily basis... there is a good deal posted each day here, but it would take less than 10 minutes to just scroll through and eyeball the titles and pictures for the day to eliminate overlap!

Regarding yet another reprint: I'm sort of at a loss. This website is colossally mismanaged. I think this is tough for so many of us because we still really believe in the concept, content, and mission of the site. It's really disappointing to see it crash and burn.

Well.....if you want my two cents you can just go look at the previous post where I said I thought it would make a really nice bar cabinet.
