Good Questions: What Colors to Go with This Couch?

090407upclose-fabric.jpgDear AT,

I love this couch. What should i do with it? I am moving into a bigger apartment on the 15th and have been shopping for furniture lately. I bought this couch. The carpets in the new place are med grey and all of the outside walls are cream city brick, with standard white apartment walls. The ceilings are 16 - 18 ft. high. I really like this couch, it is interesting and different. It is in great shape, no fading etc. What other colors should I use?

I have two espresso color leather club chairs with more modern lines but still very classic and a 2.5 x 4 rectangular ottoman in the same. Any suggestions? I can't send a photo of the place yet because I haven't moved in. I am very anxious. These pics show the couch (still at the previous owner's house).

Thank you,

sarah

Dear Sarah,

We love pops of orange-reds, turquoise and varying shades of green, light woods and sharp, crisp white to go along with a duller green like that of your vintage sofa. We think these color combos modernize without getting drab, common if a room is heavy on browns and greens. With the heaviness of the sofa and dark leather ottoman and club chairs, we think you'll need to make an effort to lighten up the rest of the room.

Marilyn and Peter, winners of last fall's color contest, work with their green sofa (albeit a more sage-y, modern one), and show a great example of this type of color combo (note bright bar countertop):

Anyone else?? What would you do to make this sofa work?

i WOULD KEEP IT OVERALL NEUTRAL, CREAM /GREY AND THEN ADD A LITTLE MORE OF THE SAGEY MOSSY GREENS, THEN MAYBE A PUNCH OF A NICE LIMEY GREEN SOMEWHERE TO 'MODERNIZE'IT Oops my capslock was on...Really I wasn't yelling!!

Robin's Egg Blue, Duck Egg blue or aqua pillows would be nice, especially in a lush velvet. Maybe a tiny bit of deep purple somewhere, as in a tiny pillow.

I have vintage armless chair that's upholstered in a very, very similar fabric as that sofa. My own sofa is chocolate brown, and I have a high-back chair that's solid red. I also have an ottoman in the same green. I also have some turquoise accents here and there - so I guess just what Heather prescribed. (Do I win?)

Anyway, I like red with the dull green, especially when it's anchored by brown.

I have a chair this color - I love it with a very light ivory. The chair itself has a dark gray steel base, which I think complements it really nicely. So - uh, yeah. I echo that dude who was yelling about neutrals.

Can't say I like this oversized couch one bit but any pinkish/peachy color would do well with this color.

oops, that link doesn't work like it's supposed to. But I was thinking a barely there version of the green or a very pale ballet pink on the walls with deep red-orange and dark grey accents.

I think that if you have your chairs, the couch and perhaps either some nice orange-y or blue throw pillows, it will look nice with the other muted tones in your soon to be apartment. I would really stay away from heavily patterned draperies though. This seems like it should be your showpiece. Everything else should compliment it instead of making your eye dizzy with a bunch of other patterns that might distract.

Thank you, I was actually waiting for a bunch of you to hate my couch. It is definitely going to be the one thing with a pattern on it in that area. As for color.. I think i like the color of the inside and outside of a plum. I will post pictures in two weeks when my ideas and yours all come together. I think that it is going to be great. I love this website. Next comes the master bed and bath.
